In the movies we watched as children, soldiers were portrayed as heroes who protected their loved ones and their country. Believing in this ideal, Captain Zero chose to attend the Defense Services Technological Academy with the goal of becoming a full-fledged soldier after completing high school. However, after the military coup in 2021, witnessing the brutal suppression of unarmed civilians shattered those beliefs.

Unable to accept the coup, he left the military despite the challenges and has been actively involved in the resistance ever since. What kind of mental strength has kept him going? How different was the reality in the military from his childhood expectations, and how was he governed by a regime of power and oppression? What are his dreams for the future? Our team had a conversation with Captain Zero during a hike, discussing these topics.

Before 2021, Brany's days were filled with either studying or hanging out with friends, or as a member of the student union, she loved being involved in school activities. Her life was full of ambitions, hopes, and dreams.

However, life is no longer as simple. It's been a while since she left university, and the opportunity to study has slipped away. Her friends are now distant. Three years of resistance and the dream of graduating seem distant, and the future is uncertain. On top of it all, she grapples with guilt for leaving her family behind.

What is her current dream, and how is she rebuilding her life after leaving her beloved family and university? We took a walk by the nearby lake and had a heart-to-heart about lives.

တော်လှန်ရေးထဲမှာပါဝင်နေကြတဲ့ လူငယ်အများစုဟာ စိတ်ဒဏ်ရာနဲ့ ဆုံးရှုံးမှုတွေကြားမှာ ကြိုးစားရှင်သန် ရပ်တည်နေကြပေမယ့်လည်း၊ ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေရဲ့ဘဝတွေဟာ အမြဲတမ်း မျက်ရည်တွေ၊ နာကျည်းမှုတွေနဲ့ပဲ​ ပြည့်နှက်နေတာမဟုတ်ပါဘူး။ စစ်ကောင်စီအာဏာသိမ်းပြီး ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေရဲ့ အိပ်မက်တွေကို လုယုဖျက်ဆီးပစ်လိုက်ပေမယ့် ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေရဲ့ ပျော်ရွှင်မှုအကုန်လုံးကို ယူမသွားနိုင်ပါဘူး။ ကျရာနေရာမှာ ပျော်ရွှင်စွာနေတတ်ကြတဲ့ လူငယ်တွေဖြစ်လို့ 'Stories We Tell’ မှာ ဝမ်းနည်းကြေကွဲစရာတွေကိုပဲ​ ပြသွားမှာမဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ ကျွန်တော်တို့ နေ့စဥ်ဘဝထဲမှာ ကြိုးစားရှင်သန်ရင်း ပျော်ရွှင်စရာ၊ နာကျည်းစရာ၊ ရသအစုံလေးတွေလည်း တင်ပြပေးသွားမှာပါနော်။

Although many of us in resistance are trying to survive amidst trauma and loss, only tears and pain do not define us. The Junta might've shattered our dreams, but not all of our happiness. So in 'Stories We Tell', you're not only witnessing our sadness and pain but a glimpse of our joy in these dark times.
