Today I had an encounter with a homeless man named Chris at Dunkin' Donuts. Despite his reluctance to talk, I engaged him in conversation and learned about his struggles with addiction, the loss of his mother to cancer, and his absent father. Chris opened up to me about how people often treat him poorly due to his homelessness. However, despite these hardships, Chris still hoped to be someone his mother would be proud of. After chatting with Chris for a while, I bought him a coffee and bagel and asked him to sit down with me. As I had to leave, Chris asked me to wait and handed me a note on a crumpled receipt. It said, "I wanted to kill myself today, but because of you, I now do not. Thank you, beautiful person." Chris's honesty and sincerity left a profound impact on me.

One of the owners of a Florida hotel, Judi, was walking on the beach this morning picking up litter and came across a bottle with a message inside. Along with the message, there was also some sand and two one dollar bills. When Judi opened the bottle and read the message, she discovered that the "sand" was actually the ashes of a woman's husband of 70 years, named Gordon. The note stated that Gordon loved to travel, so his wife had sent him on a journey by placing his ashes in a bottle with a note and money for someone to call her when the bottle landed. The bottle had originally been placed in the water at Big Pine Key in March 2012, and had been found at Islamorada before finally washing up on Judi's beach in Key Colony. Judi called the wife in Tennessee, who was overjoyed to learn of Gordon's travels. Judi added her own note to the bottle, which already contained three others, and placed the bottle in a rum bottle with an extra dollar in case Gordon's journey required a long distance call. A memorial service or celebration of Gordon's life will be held on the beach later today before the bottle is sent on its way again.

Firefighters in Fort Myers, Florida were approached by a driver with an unusual request for help. The driver explained that there was a python in the engine compartment of their truck. The Fort Myers Fire Department quickly sprang into action, with the "city python cowboys" successfully removing the snake from the vehicle. The ball python was identified as an escaped pet and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was alerted. The incident occurred on Thursday morning as Engine 14 was returning to the station after a medical call.
