Paper is ubiquitious and in the chairs of Brian Thoreen it is literally supportive. The co-founder of Gallery Masa glued wrinkled manila paper to create Paragraphic in Four Stacks, four separate chairs. The sheets were glued only on the seat area, and the tension that created tilted the edges on two sides to form the backrest.

Winding staircases, mezzanines and double-height spaces merge levels and underline the sense of movement inherent in the house. Beneath the stairs a traditional vase from Oaxaca sits alongside ceramics by Perla Valtierra. On the Petala coffee table by Jorge Zalszupin, ceramics from Japan and Austrian maker Matthias Kaiser sit alongside a candleholder from Su Wu’s shop Casa Ahorita in Mexico City. Discover of Perla Valtierra’s insights and the unique interplay between architecture and experience in Volume 11 of Ark Journal.

Entering the main hall of Hvitträsk is otherworldly.

In winter, deep windows diffuse the modest stream of daylight reflected by the outside snow. Equal measures of light and shadow, this space is as much about what you cannot see as what you can.

That is what makes it a place to rest your eyes and mind, sensing the sometimes extreme level of detail as you approach it rather than trying to take it all in at once.

"To me this house works as a daily inspiration. When I work on new pieces or fall in love with an old piece, it is somehow always related to this place. The house influences my choices and has become a measure for my practice," says designer and craftsman Thomas Serruys about the house built by Belgian architect Marc Dessauvage in 1978 that he and his wife, architect Katharina Smalle, live in.

"I hold less priority to everything being in place constantly. My life is more balanced, flexible, and spontaneous," Says Phillip Lim about his Long Island beach house. "Everything flows from that place, and I see that as my superpower. It is about applying my own personal lens on different things and in the end the sum of the parts makes up a whole."

Designer Bruno Mathsson built a home both revolutionary and revelatory, an intimate testament of an elusive character.
His work and, by extension, his home tell the story of a designer with an immense capacity to observe and alleviate the human condition. All while remaining deeply private.

"I don't seek to possess this house alone; I am merely the custodian of the key. I want my friends to come in and share it, to come and leave their traces, just like me. I came and left my mark, and as more people come, we can leave behind some memories of the era. That's when this house becomes meaningful and embodies a heritage of history," says artist Su Xiaobai about his home in Düsseldorf, designed by architect Oliver Jungel.

"I think the decoration has been instinctual more than intentional. And you can say it has produced a fresh perspective. It's not like you see a photo and want the whole set. Everything has a new language," designer Phillip Lim says about his Long Island beach house. Aiming to buy nothing new, Lim has handpicked everything guided by an intuitive interplay that makes the aesthetic more like an afterthought.

SCRATCH OF THE WOOL

On the cusp of autumn after a lengthy Indian summer, we are anticipating the quiet and slowness that comes with the season. This month, we have asked Alisa Larsen, contributing writer and part of the editorial team, to put together a playlist that reflects the calm atmosphere of her favourite month, October. Including tracks by Tara Clerkin Trio, Cluster, even Frank Sinatra, she invites you to embrace the cool crisp air and scratch of the wool with an hour of gently invigorating sounds.

VOL X.

Volume X is our tribute to the worlds of design and architecture — past, present, and future — which have defined and inspired our journey over the past five years. For this issue, we delve further into the intersections of human life with architecture and design, uncovering the profound impact they can have on our lives at home and in public spaces.

This time, we visit designer Phillip Lim's beachside house in Long Island; a historic house in Düsseldorf remade for the artist Su Xiaobai; a brutalist home in Bruges; Henri Timi's workshop in Marche, to name a few. We speak to Formafantasma and Tadao Ando, as well as inviting Colin King to style and curate the craft culture-centred collection of American designer Jack Lenor Larsen. Our case studies with stylist Pernille Vest continue, exploring the perfectly imperfect, unpolished edges and raw materiality that reveals simple perfection.
