There are heaps of amazing slopes all over Honshū and Hokkaidō (like Niseko), but in this guide we’re focusing on ski and snowboard resorts near Tokyo — and we’re capping it at the “a few hours away” mark.
While skiing and snowboarding near Tokyo may not be cheap, with careful planning, a few days of winter adventure can be had within a reasonable budget. As an added bonus, many of the ski resorts have onsen nearby — perfect for a relaxing soak after a day of intense activity on the slopes.

Don’t miss a single petal this spring: here is the first 2025 Japan cherry blossom season forecast. (Remember to swipe.)

P.S. We know it is technically still winter — but think of spring.

These are the dates for blossoming (not full bloom). Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures should be all fully blossomed-up by end of March/early April in 2025, which is the average.

The Japanese archipelago runs on a roughly southwest to northeast axis, therefore the spring warmth — and the cherry blossoms — travel up the country from bottom to top.

Please remember that this is just a forecast. Individual trees, different sub-regions, and the weather (wind and rain especially) may affect flowering times.

Whoever says there is nothing to do in Tokyo over New Year is wrong -- just take a look at this list.

Japan has a host of traditions, usually involving the first visit of the year to a shrine or temple, and those religious sites often accommodate the flow of people with markets, food stalls, and rituals. For Western-style events, you'll still find club parties and a few fireworks here and there.

Tokyo's Best Day Trip: Your Guide to Hiking Mount Takao

Mount Takao has it all: stunning views, delicious food, and exciting festivals. Why not spend a day exploring the (semi) wilds of one of Tokyo’s best-loved mountains?

The 599m-tall mountain — called Takao-san by locals — is easily hikeable and is especially popular with couples, families, and seniors. Though you can actually skip the hiking if you like: Mount Takao has a ropeway that takes you most of the way up. It’s located in Tama at the western edge of Tokyo, about an hour by train from Shinjuku Station.

A special fireworks display will be held in Yokohama for New Year!

While New Year’s Eve fireworks displays aren’t common in Japan (and especially not as big as in other countries), there are some spots just outside the center of Tokyo that put on a show.

Yokohama Sparkling Twilight, an event that sees 5 minutes of fireworks in Yokohama on sporadic days throughout the year, will have a special display on December 31 at midnight. The countdown can be seen from the Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel and the show will last for around 5 minutes.

The fireworks will go off at Osanbashi Pier and Shinko Pier and can be seen from all around. Yokohama Marine Tower are also selling tickets (as of writing they have quite a few still available).

Also in Kanagawa, Yokosuka has a special New Year’s countdown that also includes fireworks and ships in the bay blowing their whistles.
