What is Nostr?

N-O-S-T-R stands for "Notes and other stuff transmitted by relays." It is an open source protocol for social media that's been growing exponentially over the past few weeks.

Just like how TCP IP is the most widely accepted internet protocol, and SMTP is the most widely accepted email protocol, Nostr is now the most widely accepted social media protocol. It incorporates the Bitcoin Lightning Network in the form of instant, permissionless "zaps" similar to "likes" on social media. That means anyone can send BTC to anyone else for posting good content. No "altcoins", thankfully.

And unlike the current top social media apps, Nostr has no central server. Instead, the network operates on a system of relays, clients, and users. When a user (Alice) posts a note using her favorite Nostr client app, that post is transmitted to multiple relays, which are then received by another user's relays (Bob), without either of them having to trust a central server. That means there is no single point of failure. If any one relay or client goes dark, there are plenty more to choose from. And because you log in with a public/private key pair instead of the typical email or phone number, security on Nostr is unmatched.

Currently, the top Nostr apps (aka clients) are Damus for iOS, Amethyst for Android, and Iris.to for web. If you are curious to try Nostr, I'd recommend visiting Nostr. How as a nice start guide, and tuning in to this week's episode, Ep. 173 - The Rise of Nostr.

“Not your keys, not your coins.”

For years now, Bitcoiners have been warning newcomers that if you don’t hold the keys to your Bitcoin, you don’t actually own any Bitcoin.

Many learned this lesson the hard way through the FTX blow up this week.

Satoshi Nakamoto himself warns about the risks of relying on “trusted third parties” in the Bitcoin whitepaper, and in the first post about Bitcoin in the P2P foundation.

Tune in to Ep. 169 to explore why not to trust third parties, and how to minimize counterparty risk. And if you haven’t done so yet, now is the time to take your Bitcoin off exchange.

Every top-down, statist policy requires that individuals give up their liberties for the “good” of the collective.

In what cases is this justified, and in what cases is this unjustified? Tune in to HTF Ep. 168 to hear arguments for libertarianism and statism.

What’s the reason for all the hype around “The Metaverse” right now? 🕹💬
- - -
One reason is that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that $FB would be transitioning from a “social media” to a “metaverse” company 👨‍🚀🖲
- - -
He explains his vision as follows: "What is the metaverse? It’s a virtual environment where you can be present with people in digital spaces. You can think of this as an embodied internet that you’re inside of rather than just looking at." 🌄
- - -
Zuck continues, “I think a good vision for the metaverse is not one that a specific company builds. It has to have the sense of interoperability and portability. You have your avatar and your digital goods, and you want to be able to teleport anywhere. You don’t want to just be stuck within one company’s stuff. It needs to be an ecosystem, something that I hope eventually millions of people will be working in and creating content for.” 🌎🏗
- - -
Similarly, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently announced that $MSFT is creating an “Enterprise Metaverse,” that would bridge the gap between in-person and remote work. By building shared, virtual environments for collaboration, participants would potentially benefit from the best of both worlds 💼🌐
- - -
There are also gaming companies, such as Roblox and Epic, that are well on their way towards realizing their own vision for the metaverse 👾🪐
- - -
What do you hope the metaverse becomes? And what will life be like once the metaverse vision becomes a reality for billions of people? 💭

The idea of the Lightning Network is, in some sense, as old as the idea of Bitcoin itself...
- - -
In the first ever instantiation of Bitcoin released circa 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto included a line of code that says, "Allow replacing with a newer version of the same transaction"
- - -
Satoshi had the foresight to make Bitcoin flexible enough to be able to scale way beyond what the "layer 1" blockchain would be able handle on its own, thus paving the way to a future where Bitcoin may become not only a secure store of value, but also a true medium of exchange used to buy daily goods and services
- - -
Elsewhere, Satoshi speaks to Bitcoin’s flexibility and potential directly when he writes, "The design supports a tremendous variety of possible transaction types that I designed years ago. Escrow transactions, bonded contracts, third party arbitration, multi-party signature, etc. If Bitcoin catches on in a big way, these are things we'll want to explore in the future, but they all had to be designed at the beginning to make sure they would be possible later"
- - -
Tune in to Ep. 152 to explore what instant, scalable, global BTC transactions mean for the future ⚡️

Why is the Lightning Network such a (potentially) big deal? ⚡️🌐
- - -
Because, if successful, the Lightning Network will solve Bitcoin's famous scalability problem
- - -
Bitcoin has thus far been limited by how many transactions can occur on the "layer 1" blockchain simultaneously. Over time, this would mean longer wait times and higher fees on the network, making BTC unusable as a day-to-day medium of exchange, and only useful as a long-term "digital gold" store of value
- - -
But now, with momentum building behind a "layer 2" solution known as the Lightning Network, that future is starting to change... The Lightning Network, a payment protocol built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, enables instant, global, near-costless Bitcoin transactions via a mesh network of peers (AKA: nodes)
- - -
A good metaphor for how this works is the following: Imagine opening up a tab at the bar: You don't need to pay for each drink every single time (i.e. transact on layer 1). You only need to show your credit card at the beginning of the night, and close your tab at the end of the night. Even better, if you already have a tab open at the bar, your friend doesn't need to open up a tab himself. Rather, he can go through you 🍻
- - -
In a similar way, the Lightning Network routes payments through nodes on the peer-to-peer network to vastly scale Bitcoin's efficiency and throughput
- - -
How will the LN impact the future of Bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies, and the legacy financial system? Tune in to Ep. 152 on HTF to find out 🎙🔭
