Coming soon to an inbox near you!

The Forum will be sent your way via the SAB newsletter. Over the next few days, the essays will also be posted on our blog (www.hillsdaleforum.com). We're excited to share this issue with you!

Here's a sneak peak at senior Cait Weighner's essay:

"If I had to assign one adjective to my 'academic career,' it might be unfinishedness. For every paper I have written or class I have taken, any sense of accomplishment or completion has been easily eclipsed by the magnitude of the unsaid, the unread, of that which simply exceeded my grasp. The deadline outruns me, and, with a stubborn sense of disbelief, I surrender my little stack of paper. Too often it seems the poor staple, rather than the thesis, does the hard honest work of holding things together. This is the point, of course. If our studies are truly “liberal” they ought to coax us to loosen that white-knuckled grip on the world, our ingrained and unconscious pretensions to control. The philosopher’s task is to love wisdom, never to master it."

"Entering this space, a space nearly luminous with gold-and-jewel-toned mosaic iconography, I felt an immediate sense of its gravity. It felt altogether fitting to pause, look up and around, and soak in the many stylized, Byzantine depictions of saints and lofty paradisal floral motifs that fill almost every square foot of the church’s interior. While the art is wonderfully preserved and spectacularly executed, its purpose as a part of living tradition and as part of daily reverence takes obvious precedence over mere display or even artistic appreciation." —Marcella Brylski '20

To read the rest of Brylski's essay, keep an eye out for the October issue of THE HILLSDALE FORUM. It'll be hitting campus just in time for Parents Weekend!

"I want to remember the loneliness so that I may someday understand the ways that it changes and ages hearts." —Ryan Pfeiffer '21

Today we're featuring an essay from our March issue on the fruit of loneliness. Take a break from drafting papers to read Ryan's reflections on what he learned from Fitzgerald and his own experiences in isolation.

In Act IV of Coriolanus, Shakespeare uses a seemingly inconsequential simile about a solitary dragon leaving its swamp. It is in this simile that Shakespeare coined the adverb “lonely.” Similarly, …

"There was no way I could pay them back, and it would be an insult to try. They delighted in giving, and mine was the privilege and the responsibility to take. So I took and I ate everything they set before me and gained probably ten delicious pounds." —Molly Kate Andrews '19

Molly Kate's essay on gratitude seemed like an appropriate selection for this season of Paschal joy. We hope you were able to enjoy some delicious feasting and celebration with your loved ones this Easter!

For fall break this year, one of my best friends invited me to come home with her to stay with her family. They were just getting ready to renovate their new farmhouse, and she wanted to see it bef…

"I had grown to associate wealth with worldliness and urbanity with shallow conduct. The description residents themselves gave of their town was 'transient,' and I interpreted that to match my preconceptions. But as I slipped into a daily cadence, this changed." —Anna Timmis '19

Take a moment to enjoy an article from our October issue: Anna's essay on the summer she spent reporting for the Santa Barbara News-Press.

I stood on the confetti-covered pavement, shoulder to shoulder with strangers. Behind me, blankets and people covered a lawn sloping downward and south. Over the hillside-house roofs peaked the oce…

"For the Christian, to see the other as he 'really is' is to see him as God does: loved beyond all comprehension and freely willed into being." —Cait Weighner '20

"Words have immense value in connecting us as humans, but we should be careful with them, lest we wield that power in such a way that we infringe upon the individuality of the other. In a way, humans are islands, but we aren’t meant to be entirely isolated; humans are meant to live in societies, and words function as the bridges between these islands, or persons. A careful and prudent use of our words, then, allows us to share our experiences with each other, creating an overlap between our inner lives..." —Nolan Ryan '20

"In architecture and interior design, Westerners scrub away the imperfections left by nature and seek to free themselves from her control through technology. In literature, Westerners seek transcendence by following the tragic arc of a hero who attains some glory by nobly resisting fate. It is difficult for Westerners to imagine an aesthetic philosophy based on imperfection, on balance, on an amoral view of the dark shadows of nature and fate. Japanese aesthetics generally, in architecture, interior design, and literature, embody a reverence, rather than a rejection, of the immutably dark aspects of nature." —Brian Freimuth '20

“Is not the difference between John Knox’s prayer, ‘Give me Scotland or I die’ and today’s two-week, GoFundMe missionary voluntourism a sign of a great change? It is nearly impossible for moderns to conceive of the paradigm of our forefathers. Either the circumstances of the modern world no longer call for this same kind of action or much of the modern Church has, for the time being, lost this zeal.” — Brian Jonsson Freimuth '20

You can finish reading Brian’s essay in our December issue of The Forum, releasing on campus tomorrow!

“Growing up I never self-consciously experienced true dependence. Although I studied hospitality by watching my parents host guests at our home in Washington, I had ever known what it felt like to be on the receiving end of the host-guest relationship. Mine was the house people came to, mine the church they visited, and I learned how to set guests at ease and to keep their glasses full. I learned how to give, but not how to receive, the gift of hospitality. Then I graduated and came to Hillsdale.” — Molly Kate Andrews '19
