A spectre is haunting Asia — The spectre of prosperity

Throughout Asia’s history, roads have often defined this prosperity. Formally established during the Han Dynasty of China in 130 BCE, the Silk Road linked the regions of the ancient world together through commerce. The trade route effectively connected two of the earliest and most important civilizations of Mesopotamia and the Tibetan Plateau together.

These roads, along with topographical features, will shape the path of Asia’s rise over thousands of years through several key stages of development.

In 1936, biologist Jean Piaget observed that when conducting mental processes, the mind will often repeat and refine earlier stages to succeed. This will be a key metaphor for understanding economic development in Asia.

Yet, our hubris to believe we can grasp what makes Asia unique should not go unchecked. Duncan J. Watts stated that common sense reasoning and history conspire to mislead us into believing that we understand more about the world of human behaviour than we do; and in turn, why attempts to predict, manage or manipulate social and economic systems so often go awry.
