We're beyond happy to share the news that Jaan Toomik's experimental short is travelling to Go Short - International Short Film Festival Nijmegen 2024! After Oberhausen, PÖFF Shorts and Short Waves, Nijmegen is a very well fitting next stop on our festival circuit!

"Two Men on Train and Someone Else" is a unique film, and we're proud that the programmes the film gets curated into also highlight this. Sometimes it's a programme about birth and death and the abstractness in between, another time it's about films beyond the boundaries of convention.

And this time it's a special programme "Kill Your Darlings" that's about films that divided the selection committee, but made it through by the power of the programmer(s) that fought for the inclusion of this film. Thank you, dear mystery curator person(s).

So peeps in the Netherlands and beyond, don't miss Go Short - 3-7 April) - and save the date for our film too: 6th April

Cannot wait!

⚡️ So much excitement these days around Jaan Toomik's latest short film "Two Men on Train and Someone Else", Mindwax's latest film festival distribution project produced by Allfilm

🌊 "Two Men..." is an elegiac farewell story that takes us to the world of old men getting ready to say their goodbyes to this enigmatic world. Each in their own bizarre way.

📍 Here's where you can catch this experimental gem that opened in this year's international competition programme of Oberhausen.

〰️SHORT WAVES - Off RAW / Out of Competition Programme
7th Nov, Tuesday – 20.00 - PIES andaluzyjski
https://shortwaves.pl/en/2023/10/off-short-waves-2/

"RAW is a completely new competition at the Short Waves Festival dedicated to films that go beyond the boundaries of convention, seeking styles, techniques, and storytelling methods previously unfamiliar to the audience. It is a competition for filmmakers aspiring to break the rules in their own style, demonstrating that the world of short cinema is a space for innovation and courage."

🐺 PÖFF SHORTS - National Competition Programme 2
8th Nov, Wednesday - 17:00 - Hall 1 Kino Artis
https://shorts.poff.ee/en/film/shorts-national-competition-2/

"As sure as the Estonian forests are green and the winters harsh yet beautiful – the best Estonian shorts have a certain indefinable magic. It’s always ironic that a nation that can often be (unfairly) maligned for a certain aloofness, can count on fiction, doc, and animation filmmakers with their achingly compassionate, persistently quirky, and defiantly humane shorts.
The 2023 National Competition takes us from birth to death with the usual intricacies of love and conflict, with abstractness in between. The past, present, and future of both Estonia and humanity are all explored as realism, magic, elegant monochrome and a rainbow of colours unfurl before us."

We had our Baltic premiere last night! We're beyond happy and honoured that Kellele ma naeratan? / Who am I Smiling For? that we co-produced was selected to the biggest sub-festival of the PÖFF | Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival dedicated to children's and youth film, Just Film. The film is screened within the festival's children's rights programme.

Kellele ma naeratan? / Who am I Smiling For?, a documentary directed by Eeva Mägi, produced by Kristofer Piir of Allfilm is a story about the strength of motherly love and a mother's fight for her children literally to her last breath. It’s a film about the coming of age of a boy amidst deep and irreversible changes, while trying to find his own way to mourn and understand the world.

Our film festival journey started at the 53rd Giffoni Film Festival and we couldn't possibly have a better follow up as Just Film. It's a festival that aims to help young people better understand and be more empathetic towards the world around them. I whole-heartedly agree and support this ethos, so this is why yesterday's screening is especially an important milestone as Kellele ma naeratan? / Who am I Smiling For? OPENED the festival.

Here are the rest of our screening times during PÖFF:

8th Nov, Wednesday - Apollo Kino Coca-Cola Plaza - 19:00 (with Q&A)
16th Nov, Thursday - Tartu Elektriteater - 17:00

Kellele ma naeratan? / Who am I Smiling For? (2023, Estonia, 60')

We’ve been silent because there are exciting projects cooking! 🥁 Producer Dora Nedeczky is co-producing Eeva Mägi’s first feature length hybrid documentary “Who Am I Smiling For?” alongside producer Kristofer Piir of Allfilm, Estonia.

We have just finished finalising the film, so beyond happy to be selected for the 20th East Silver Market, that’s held at the East Doc Platfrom in Prague, organised by the Institute of Documentary Film.

In addition to the selection to the programme the film has also been nominated for the Silver Eye Award! ⚡️

We’re looking forward to pitch the film on the market on the 28th of March - tomorrow already!

Thank you Eesti Filmi Instituut / Estonian Film Institute for supporting our participation! ✨

🎯 Three words: Powerful. Short. Projects.

After many weeks of selection process and an inspiring online session back in September here are the participants of MIDPOINT Shorts 2022-2023!

We are so happy and proud that our CEO and producer Dora Nedeczky joined MIDPOINT Institute as their producer tutor for this program.

We cannot wait to continue the work with the 5 short film project teams IRL in Prague and eventually in Trieste within When East Meets West!

🗞 We've been silent because we had SO MUCH GOING ON!

🦎 One of the good news is that we've finished our latest short film by Péter Lichter and Bori Máté, called Dr. Moreau! It's an abstract piece set in a world where human and nature as separate categories don't exist.

Following on the directors' growing found footage legacy, this too has recycled imagery in its core, but this time colliding with new 35mm and s8 footage shot by Alina Vincze.

🤫 We're in a beyond celebratory mood, that's connected to our world premiere, we'll soon be able to share with you too!

🪲 Until then here's are some making of shots about our re-recording sessions with our narrator Roland Rába, and our brilliant sound designer, Péter Terner, who alone built up the soundscape of our 20 minutes film. Plus a still, bc we like to tease!

We're so honoured to be back to Vienna Shorts, one of our most favourite film festivals! This time we'll present the first part of Péter Lichter and Bori Máté's abstract horror opus The Philosophy of Horror called Etymology.

The film will be screened in the programme (FOUND) FOOTAGE II, which is part of this year’s focus, We’ve Come A Long Long Way Together. The programme is a glance at current works that deal with (Found) Footage.

"In part II, North Koreans report their experiences watching forbidden foreign films, and we marvel at 8 mm footage from Yugoslavia and explore archival material and semi-historical accounts from Ukraine. A split screen playfully familiarizes us with the process of sound design by way of asynchronous realities, while overpainted footage hits us with some true horrors." curator Doris Bauer

Read more about the festival's focus here and browse through the programme here, and good news for friends who can't attend in person, that films will be available online too for 10 days!

Our short film Happiness is a Journey continues its.. well... journey on the festival circuit with our beloved Go Short - International Short Film Festival Nijmegen ☀️

Directors Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan's film is part of the programme called "Working in Late Capitalism"

"When capitalism emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries, it was expected to be the solution to economic inequality across the globe. Rather than being the source of societal wealth, however, capitalism in the 21st century entered a stage of absurdity with overpowered companies and extreme inequalities (that are still growing). This programme shows how the capitalist ideology is definitely not profiting the working class, and how the effects of the world’s dominant economic system harm individuals in both their daily and working lives."

2021 was an incredible year for our beloved short film GUO4 directed by Peter Strickland. We're so delighted that even though we produced the film in 2019 with such a tiny crew and so limited resources, two years later it's still being discovered by new audiences and acknowledged by film festivals that are so dear to us. Here's the three most cherished GUO4 memories we have from last year out of many:

🥀 Altered Innocence included GUO4 in its compilation "Altered Innocence Vol. 1." along with films from auteurs we appreciate so much, for instance Thank you Frank Jaffe for the opportunity!

🌈 We had our US premiere at the 45th edition of Frameline Festival the world's biggest LGBTQ+ film festival as part of their “Dark Twisted Fantasies” short program online and in San Francisco, big thank you Joe Bowman and Lindsey Hodgson for having us!

💗 We had our German premiere at 33. Filmfest Dresden's "SERIOUSLY! WTF?" section (!) curated by wonderful Anne Gaschütz and Daniel Vadocký.

Long live short films!

🐺 Finally the day of our Baltic premiere has come! 🐺 Dear Tallinn peeps and PÖFF | Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival / PÖFF Shorts guests, come and see our short doc Happiness is a Journey that premiered in Locarno today at 18.15 at Kino Artis.

The film is part of the international live action competition, and our programme is largely whirling around the concept of labour:

"While the pandemic is touched upon in the programme, the films here remind us that the everyday struggles of humanity still go on. There are loves to be found and hearts to be broken. There are corporations to fight and death to confront. There are mysteries to solve and joy and laughter to be had."

cannot wait to watch the rest of the films!
