‏A conference took place on Saturday 16 December 2023 at the Cultural Workshop Agion Omologiton in Nicosia, Cyprus. It included a CIFEJ-ECFA-Cultural Workshop Agion Omologiton meeting in the morning, and in the afternoon a short presentation of the two international organizations and a meeting/networking with organizations and/or people in Cyprus related to Film Education and Cinema for Children and Youth. The participants were: Doros Demetriou (CIFEJ Board Member and ECFA Member) and Panayiotis Theodorou on behalf of the Cultural Workshop (Member of CIFEJ and CIFEJ), President and Vice President of CIFEJ Vassilis Karamitsanis and Emma Pendiuc respectively, and Pantelis Panteloglou, President of ECFA.

Throughout my childhood I have witnessed, individuals with unconventional identity are publicly bullied and social issues like Domestic Violence, Child Abuse are ignored in the pretext of ‘Family Matter’ is very common practice across the globe. As Writer and Director of ‘Kaise Bataaoon’ (How to Express), I condemn misogyny and suppression. I believe that to build a strong nation, we need to provide safer environment for Women, Children and Weaker sections of society.

🔴 who are we in CIFEJ?

Dr. Madhu Chopra is a powerhouse in her own right… a family physician and an ENT surgeon, she is now a renowned cosmetic aesthetician with a private clinic in Juhu, Mumbai. Dr. When Priyanka was crowned Miss India, and then Miss World, Dr. Chopra gave up a thriving practice and moved to Mumbai to allow her daughter every opportunity to pursue her dreams. This also led to her managing the formative years of her career, while also being an advisor, directly handling all the financial aspects of her life. This experience has equipped her with the skills necessary to successfully run a production house.
Dr. Madhu Chopra has a vision to give platform to people looking to establish themselves in the film industry. She always had a special inclination for children films
The Film named “Pahuna-The Little Visitors was made in association with Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI) and Dr. Madhu Chopra was the pioneer in forming this professional tie-up. Pahuna was showcased in many international film festivals like Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Cannes Film Festival, Schlingel Film Festival, Busan International Kids & Youth Film Festival, etc. She has also ensured commercial viability and worldwide visibility of the film by striking a deal for showcasing the film on Netflis. INTERNATIONAL CENTRE OF FILMS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE.
She has produced several other regional movies in Marathi, Punjabi, Assamese, etc. the Marathi Films have also bagged National Awards amongst several other accolades which has received over the years. Currently she is foraying into Digital space and producing a digital show in association with Netflix.
The production house in her able guidance is also working on some other children projects and will surely ensure that she keeps spreading good stories across the globe through this medium.

🟢 On the occasion of World Refugee Day (21st June), we delve into one of the films that have won the CIFEJ award and introduce it again.
Children refugees face immense challenges as they navigate through displacement, loss, and uncertainty. Their resilience and strength shine through as they seek safety, hope, and a brighter future.
Among the movies, some directors have written about the issue of refugees. This film is one of the most successful films that deals with immigrant children and their world.
Binti (2019) is a drama film, Wrote and directed by Frederike Migom
Bebel Tshiani Baloji played as a Binti role. The film was produced by Belgium’s Bulletproof Cupid and the Netherlands’ Family Affairs. It was co-produced by Belgian outfit Kwassa Films.
The themes of this film are poignant, addressing broken families, immigration, and children in refugee. However, the story is narrated in a modern style, brimming with charm, effectively light on these issues without being overly didactic. The film's ability to explain children, adults, and also childhood is valuable. The visuals are remarkable, characterized by vibrant costumes and set designs, creating an atmosphere of lightness even during the film's most somber moments.

Binti (12) was born in Congo but has lived with her father Jovial (40) in Belgium since she was a baby. Despite not having any legal documents, Binti wants to live a normal life, and dreams of becoming a famous vlogger like her idol Tatyana. In the movie, Binty tries to fight to achieve her personal dream and many things and find solutions.

🔴 who are we in CIFEJ?

Doros Demetriou was born in Nicosia in 1970. He is a cinema historian, events’ organizer, and curator of film screenings.
He is a member of ECFA and elected Member of the Director’s Board of CIFEJ, and a member of the Cinema Advisory Committee of Cyprus.
He is the vice-president and curator of events at the “Fotodos” Photography Club, curator of cinema programs at the Cultural Workshop Agion Omologiton, Nicosia, and one of the artistic directors of the "Images and Views of Alternative Cinema" (IVAC) festival.
He is a collaborator of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus on various Film Education programs, under the title “The power and magic of cinema”.
He is an advisor and jury member at the British Columbia Environmental Film Festival (BCEFF), in Vancouver, Canada.
Doros presents lectures on the History of Cinema at various cultural organizations and schools in Cyprus and abroad.
He also has studied Cinematherapy at The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
He has studied in London and holds degrees in Electronic Engineering (BEng) and Visual Theories/Cinema (MA).

🔴 who are we in CIFEJ?

Fatma Alloo is a Tanzanian journalist. In the early 80's she worked as a journalist at Daily News in Dar es Salaam and as a radio producer in Uganda during the war years. In 1987 she established Tanzania Media Women's Association (TAMWA) together with other women journalists. She is involved in creating media visual images so as to impact the television programs which has been introduced in Tanzania in 1994. She is a founder of the Zanzibar Int’l Film Festival (ZIFF) and is now its vice chairperson. She works as a freelance development/media consultant. She has written many books and her movies have been shown at different festivals around the world.

It's been 10 years since I became a member of this prestigious international organization and a part of the warm and welcoming Cifej Family. In these years we have been together through good and challenging times, as well. I have participated in CIFEJ activities as a simple member or as a board member and even as Vice President for two years. Whichever position I held I did my best to serve and remain faithful to its purpose. At the same time, my own organization, LITTLE STARS School of Film and Television for Children kept going without a day off, even though the pandemic times when our sector was hit hard. Over 7000 children trained, 45 films for children produced, over 100.000 children direct spectators of our films in caravans in school, 20 film premiers and so much more, in 12 years of existence. It became a model in Romania that many other organizations now replicate with great success. A success story to inspire anyone around the globe.

my experience and also serve through a series of training that I can hold as a MindSet Teacher and Coach in the field of creating the Cinematographer Winner's Mindset for all the members of CIFEJ, an attitude that is required in these challenging times. My specialization in the science of thinking that I did in the past 3 years helped me raise the activity of my Film School for Children and also my production house despite the pandemic and help also other professionals in their businesses. I can do this for CIFEJ members, as well, as my heart will always be with cinematography and media literacy for children and above all, CIFEJ itself.emanuela.elena

The Universal Kids Film Festival (member of CIFEJ), has been held in Turkey. Rowena Martinez, the director of the festival says: "It is not a big festivals of but it is a sincere effort to contribute towards world peace by bringing inspiration to our young ones through cinema. We create to inspire, we inspire to spread peace, for an inspired society will never create war." The festival was done in several districts, however the one in the video was the film presentation of Polish Film ‘Triple Trouble’ on the 15th of October in Altinova, a district in Yalova province of Turkey. Rowena says:" Due to the pandemic, we had to show the films outdoors which left us only the evening hours. We have spread our film showings in various cities and for a period of two months beginning September till last week of October. In the past we invited international delegates at the same time for a period of five days and hold film screenings within those periods with the invited film directors or actors presenting their own films to the young audiences. This year, due to the pandemic, we have modified our programming and presentations by trying to spread the festival in a couple of months and guests were invited on separate times depending on the screening schedule of their own films."
