Harding University HU16 Harding University's 24/7 TV station in Searcy, AR, featuring numerous live and edited student-produced programs in the fall and spring semesters

Harding University's television station launched its first broadcast on September 26, 1983, as TV12 on the White County Cable Television system in Searcy, Arkansas. Mike James and Lou Butterfield served as the faculty sponsors. The initial programming schedule was 12 hours per week beginning with a live 20-minute newscast at 6:30 each weeknight. Programming concluded at 8:50 with a short devotiona

l thought presented on a rotating basis by a number of students. Students also produced five original shows each week, ranging from 15 to 30 minutes each. Initial news anchors were Doug Hurst, Jeanne Stewart, and John T. Thompson, all of whom graduated and were offered employment in the news business. In 1989, the signal moved to Channel 19 on the cable system; and in the mid-1990s, the signal moved again to Channel 16. In recent years, the signal was expanded beyond the cable system to reach a worldwide audience through Internet streaming at streaming.harding.edu. In 2021, what was now branded as HU16 launched new apps that featured two live streams and video-on-demand programming for Amazon Fire, Android, AppleTV, iOS, and Roku platforms. In May of 2022, the station said farewell to its longstanding channel on the White County Cable system as audiences embraced cord-cutting and other TV options. The current broadcast schedule includes a weekday live newscast, "Live at Five," produced entirely by students each semester; Harding University's weekday chapel live from the Benson Auditorium; live and recorded Harding University and Harding Academy athletic events; and a number of other original programs and vignettes produced by Harding students. Numerous graduates from this program have gone on to land jobs in the industry, some of them award-winning leaders in the field.

Congratulations to our own Tim Hamilton on such a great achievement.

Tim Hamilton has spent his career behind the camera, covering sports and news stories for KATV Channel 7 and in the classroom, raising up the next generation of journalists at his alma mater. Next weekend in Little Rock, he will be inducted into the Mid-America EMMY Silver Circle. Please join us for this very special night of celebration. Tim is one of eight being inducted into this honorary society of professionals.

Harding University Professor Bill Brant’s decision to send Tim Hamilton to KATV Channel 7 in Little Rock in the fall of 1979 for his internship, led to his 32-year career at Channel 7.

Tim worked as a photojournalist covering news and sports events in Arkansas and around the world. It was a series of reports on Peru’s war on drugs that led to his second Emmy. The Bill Clinton presidential campaign in 1992 was his first. He was nominated for five total. He has won a national Edward R. Murrow Award and four regional Murrow awards.

Growing up in Melbourne, Arkansas with a population of 800, Tim dreamed about being the Voice of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Working at the campus radio station at Harding and doing play-by-play for basketball and baseball, he realized that wasn’t a realistic goal.

However, the thrill of his time at KATV was covering the Razorbacks with Paul Eells, the voice of the Razorbacks.
The decade of the 90’s included three final fours and a national championship in basketball. Witnessing history from the front row was extra special.

In 2012 Tim had an opportunity to return to Harding University to supervise the sports broadcasting program and teach students interested in the profession.

The best part of his job is hearing from students who are working in broadcasting, and they call or text to tell him where they are and what they are covering.

Tim is married to the former Laura Roper. They have one son, Chandler and daughter-in-law, Hannah. And a dog named Toby.
