On the first Friday of the month since March of 2020, Bandcamp have waived their revenue share to help support artists on Bandcamp. Another great review about our AWAY 10 YEARS compilation by German powerhouse magazine Groove. Such a nice read, and it's much appreciated to receive these warm words on a project we've worked on for so many months. If you're not German, below you can also read a translated version in English.

English version:

In ten years, the party series AWAY has firmly established itself in ://about blank at Berlin's Ostkreuz with its captivating booking between house and techno. For the anniversary, there was not only a three-day party with the usual suspects from Omar S to new friends from Southeast Asia but also the release of a compilation with tracks by the artists who play more or less regularly at AWAY.

The opener delivers Moodymann from Detroit with heady house grooves and his whispering voice before it gets more pumping with vocal-heavy tech house from Eluize. Both tracks would probably run more during the day in the garden of the Blank, to which Move D also dedicates his contribution "The Garden". A tribute to perhaps the best outdoor floor in town, this hopeful house carried by warm chords represents exactly the exuberant mood with which Move D was allowed to close the anniversary party as the last DJ on Sunday night.

But since there's also a lot of techno going on inside AWAY, the compilation also features hefty machine jams by Lady Starlight or Inland, sharp-cutting acid by AWAY co-founder Discrete Circuit and big room techno by Mark Broom.

Somewhere in between, you'll surprisingly hear the 1993 hit "Show Me Love" – sampled by Axel Boman into a dreamy, dubby deep house number. This is AWAY, too. Leopold Hutter

For us, AWAY has always been connected – in a literal sense – to break away from the monotony of daily routines. That's why we chose the name for our party series., and tried to apply the same thinking to the label.

In the fast-paced and interconnected world of the 21st century, people often seek opportunities to disconnect from their everyday responsibilities. The word "away" encapsulates the desire for escapism, allowing individuals to temporarily leave behind their concerns and immerse themselves in the joy and excitement – whether that's going out or trying to shut off while listening to something that moves them.

On top, the music industry has experienced a tremendous shift toward digital distribution platforms. The word "away" represents the boundless possibilities of reaching a global audience with just a few clicks. Artists can release their music "away" from traditional barriers, allowing their songs to be heard and appreciated by listeners worldwide.

The label AWAY Music started in 2016, mainly as an outlet for AWAY's residents and more artists that perform(ed) at the parties. From the beginning, we had no problem following a DIY approach, we only prepared releases when we had a nice package together, allowing us to avoid the pressure of becoming a label that had to release new material every two months.

One of the most memorable moments of the label so far has been the whole process of putting out the self-titled debut LP by The Mulholland Free Clinic, the producer supergroup consisting of Move D, Jonah Sharp, and Juju & Jordash. We recorded it during a great party in 2017. It took us 5 hours to set up all the gear and do the soundcheck; everyone was supper happy afterward – a night to remember. But then, we realized that we had accidentally muted all the channels on the individual recording stems. Luckily, we still had the stereo recording, which turned out to be a great long-player!

Although we're happy to join forces with our distributor !K7 Records, over the years, we definitely felt how increasingly difficult it is to recoup the money invested in the releases. We know the industry has changed, but we still want to release vinyl records. That's why it's amazing to revitalize AWAY Music with our AWAY 10 Years compilation.

The word "away" signifies the departure from conventional norms and the willingness to explore new sonic territories. However, AWAY Music started with its main focus on house music. But due to our maxim to captivate listeners with fresh sounds, we opened up our label to all sorts of vibes – from the early deep house contributions by Joe Claussell, Mr. Ties, and Christian Vance to more minimalistic atmospheres with the limited vinyl series "Reissued", dedicated to re-releasing iconic cuts from the vast collaborative catalog of Move D & Pete Namlook.

Despite the growth of the AWAY events, we didn't really put AWAY Music first and therefore didn't consistently release music that works as an expansion to our parties – something that we regret. And just when we were getting ready to drop some amazing series and EPs, the pandemic hit, putting a hold on everything for a solid three years. We were particularly eager to release our music on vinyl, but pressing plants are experiencing longer turnaround times with the current vinyl revival.

But we're not giving up! With our anniversary compilation AWAY 10 YEARS, we're determined to bring back the energy and expand the range of our releases. We have some exciting plans in store for the months and years ahead, and we can't wait to share them with you.

Day 2 is now in the books, and what an incredible day and night it was! Even the rain couldn't stop us. A heartfelt thank you to all the DJs and the amazing crowd for making it unforgettable.

But wait, there's more! Prepare yourself for another surprise because the techno stalwart Mark Broom will be joining Discrete Circuit for another legendary b2b in the MDF. Meanwhile, Ruede Hagelstein and Amin Fallaha will take us on a journey to end the night in the Lobby.

The weather forecast is looking good as well. No rain today, but a comfortable 24 degrees. Drop by for a drink or two, and don't forget that the delicious food will be served by the talented Merold once again. See you on the dancefloor!

Starting a label comes with a lot of obstacles. One key factor is to know where to promote your music and how to sell it. While platforms like Bandcamp make it easier for independent labels, there's nothing quite like a strong partnership with a distribution company.

Since 2016, AWAY has been happy to have found its home with legendary !K7 Records. We basically kicked off our partnership when we collaborated on Moodymann's DJ Kicks release party. It was a special project with many firsts, such as hosting Peggy Gou and Patrick Mason.

!K7 Records has solidified its place as a legendary label through its unwavering commitment to pushing musical boundaries. With a rich history spanning over three decades, !K7 has consistently championed genre-defying artists and trailblazing sounds such as Kruder & Dorfmeister, Carl Craig, Four Tet, Marcel Dettmann, Hercules And Love Affair, Matthew Herbert, and many more. Each post will reveal some accumulated data, a hidden backstory, or surprising memory about the heart and soul of AWAY and what it is today.

When it comes to releasing music, it's obviously essential to have the music itself, but it also needs to have the right sound across all systems. The final step tough – before it makes its way to the public – is the work in the mastering studio. Mastering is the craft of balancing the sonic elements of a stereo mix and optimizing playback across all systems and media formats.

For our AWAY 10 YEARS compilation, we have chosen Mike Grinser from Manmade Mastering to handle this task. Mike has been mastering our music since AWAY001, and we fondly remember sitting with him during the production of the first release, explaining our vision for the label's sound and future direction.

Back in 2013, the future was uncertain, but Mike captured all of our input and truly brought out the best in the tracks. After all these years and a short break on the label, we returned to Mike with our 10-year compilation, trusting him to work his magic again. The results speak for themselves, and we are extremely happy to have Manmade Mastering as our trusted partner.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT:

Months and months in the making, but now we can finally share the news with you: We're celebrating our 10th anniversary with a label compilation called AWAY 10 YEARS.

Initially, we planned to revitalize our label AWAY Music way earlier, but the pandemic wouldn't allow it. But now is the right time! We couldn't be happier about the whole package. Ten years, ten tracks. The compilation has a great mixture of big guns artists, longtime friends, trusted residents, and even a debut of newcomers.

AWAY 10 YEARS will hit the stores in three weeks on Friday, June 23rd. Over the next few weeks, we will share all there is to share – introducing all the artists on the compilation, letting them describe their tracks, and way more. Keep an eye on this channel and be part of our excitement!

The Berlin-based DJ is naturally drawn to tracks with a thick density and deep sub-swinging elements to create that very specific groove. Kann breaks down her style as ‘pushy house music and groovy techno’. Meet her at AWAY .blank.berlin on March 10!

Meet ‘Electric Indigo‘ who has performed in 45 countries across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. She represents an intelligent and distinguished interpretation of techno and electronic music. Her DJ-sets are characterized by a wide variety with a clarity of vision and a depth that comes from a deep understanding of the music and the art of DJing. As a composer and musician, she creates music for concert spaces and clubs, and occasionally for stage plays and short films. In her compositions and live performances, she emphasizes the spatial placement and precise structures of subtly elaborated sounds, often generated with granular synthesis. Her new album “Ferrum” was released on Editions Mego in March 2020. The Republic of Austria awarded Electric Indigo the Kunstpreis Musik 2020.
