We continue to get requests for AFR headed combinations. We understand that many customers already have headers, rockers, and pistons for AFR heads and cannot easily switch to our Hi Port heads. Not to mention there are simply a large number of AFR heads out there.
Second to this we have also been challenged by many customers to offer a complete engine package that is more budget friendly, but still makes good power.
With this said we have invested many hours and dollars in developing engine and parts combinations for AFR heads.
We started by taking a close look at the heads, and looked at things we could improve on without breaking the bank.
Camshaft development was the heart of the combination. These heads have specific characteristics that we were able to refine and explode into more power with our camshaft designs. We have developed a series of camshaft lobe designs for engines with AFR heads. We have these for N/A, Boosted, and Nitrous Combinations, and even went so far as to offer them for the OEM .710” lift spring from AFR, should a customer not want to change springs and for customers wanting to change springs to increase the lift to .800” by utilizing the valvespring kit we developed with for the cylinder head.
We also took the time to develop a piston with Diamond by doing a proper dome trace, and most importantly developing proper pocket depths for these heads-which is crucial in making big power with them!
We are stocking these pistons here for Nitrous, Boosted, and N/A engines for multiple bores and strokes!
We started with our popular 427R crate engine and built with optional 4.100 stroke crankshaft and 4.155 cylinder bore, yielding 445 cid. We used a flat top piston yielding low 12:1 compression ratio, opted for a 2924 Edelbrock intake, and used a camshaft that was 268 intake 278 exhaust @ .050 with .700” valve lift. A combination like and like this is what we get the most calls on with the question “How much more power can you make me?”
This set up made 706hp @ 6500 rpm and 629 ft/lb @ 5100 rpm.
We then set out to make some power upgrades to maximize the AFR cylinder head design. We started by changing the pistons to our New Diamond/Bennett designed piston kit for AFR heads, with a CNC dome profile to match the combustion chamber, proper valve pocket depths to accept a large camshaft, .043-.043-3.0mm ring package, and gas ports. We also made this piston nitrous friendly! They pushed our final compression ratio touching 14:1.
Next, we spent many hours designing and testing various cam lobe designs that fit the AFR port and flow characteristics-giving us Bennett Custom Cam designs just for AFR heads. This is where we found some major power gains! We then coupled these lobes that yielded .800” lift with a matching Bennett Valvespring Kit to complement the new increased lift and the lobe profiles.
Making some small tweaks to the cylinder heads and then topping the combo off with an Edelbrock 2828 intake and out of box Holley 1050 Dominator carburetor.
The result 816hp @ 7100 rpm peak with an 800+hp curve from 6900 to 7700 and 635 ft/lb @ 5500 rpm. We are very impressed and happy with the end result of this combination!
Our parts offerings that are designed for AFR heads include: Bennett Custom Cams for all power adders and NA, Valvespring Kits, Diamond/Bennett Piston Kits available in high compression for NA and Nitrous and low compression for Boosted applications, and a Cylinder Head Upgrade that includes valvejob and minor porting tweaks.
From the complete engine side, we have done a 427R version we are tagging as an 427AFR. These are available in 427 to 445 cid combinations and start at $17,995!
