The death toll from the catastrophic landslides and torrential rains triggered by Cyclone Remal has risen to 28, according to latest reports.

Authorities have resumed the search operations in the areas as several bodies have still not been recovered.

After Cyclone Remal made a landfall in Northeast India, the inclement weather conditions led to chaos across the state, claiming lives and disrupting normalcy.

The death toll from the Melthum quarry collapse is 14, while the other 14 deaths have been reported from surrounding areas which have witnessed massive landslides.

Fatalities have been reported at Salem locality where a landslide has claimed the lives of a family of three.

Falkawn, Kanan, Kulikawn, and ITI localities also witnessed deaths caused by landslides.

In response to these events, rescue operations were initiated by the state disaster response team, paramilitary forces, members of the Young Mizo Association, and local volunteers.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, accompanied by the Home Minister, Sports Minister, MLAs, DC, SP, Central Young Mizo Association officials, and others, has been actively involved in assessing the situation and coordinating rescue efforts at various disaster sites.

Responding to this urgent need, the local Young Mizo Association issued a call for a community cleanup effort at these affected cemeteries.

In a bid to provide relief to the affected residents, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced an ex-gratia of Rs 15 crore for landslide victims due to Cyclone Remal in Mizoram. Furthermore, a compensation of Rs 4 lakhs will be provided to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the landslides, offering a semblance of support during these trying times.

:- The Supreme Court issued a directive on Thursday for the Centre to deport 17 foreigners currently held in a detention center in Assam, highlighting that no criminal charges have been registered against them.

A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan made the decision after reviewing a report submitted by the State Legal Services Authority, which confirmed the detention of 17 declared foreigners in the Assam detention center.

"We are of the view that Union of India must take immediate steps for deporting these 17 foreigners as there is no offence registered against them," stated the bench.

This development follows the Supreme Court's earlier inquiry in April, where it sought information from the State Legal Services Authority of Assam regarding foreigners detained for more than two years in detention centers. Additionally, the court instructed the legal services authority to assemble a team to assess the facilities provided to these detainees.

The Supreme Court addressed a petition requesting the release of individuals who have been detained for over two years in Assam's detention centers.

Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) announced relaxation of the ongoing indefinite shutter down for six hours, from 12 noon to 6 pm Monday, a decision made amidst mounting grievances among the general public.
In a statement, DCCI vice president V Shikuto Sema said the relaxation was in response to requests from the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) and Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industries (CNCCI). DCCI said the decision was to facilitate and provide relief to public for stocking essential supplies and meeting other needs.

However, Shikuto also cautioned that the indefinite shutter down will resume from April 30 onwards, if there was no positive response from the state government to the DCCI’s five-point charter of demands.
Meanwhile, several district trade organizations on Saturday had also informed of the one-day window period in their respective district for public to stock up essential items.
The ongoing indefinite shutter down called by DCCI in Dimapur from April 26 entered its third day, Sunday, while the CNCCI-backed indefinite state-wide shutter-down strike from April 27 entered its second day Sunday. The shutter-down strike has been by and large peaceful so far, with no report of any untoward incident.

On Sunday, a few thousand people from Dimapur, were seen flocking to markets at Khatkhati, Lahorijan in neighbouring Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
Hundreds of vehicles lined up at Nagaland gate area as shoppers made their way to markets in Lahorijan and Khatkati. Though vendors in Assam denied hiking up rates of various items, it was found that rates of essential commodities varied even within the same market. It was observed that vendors located along the roadside were selling vegetables at higher rates compared to vendors within the market area.
Additional number of Assam Police personnel were deployed to manage the surge in vehicular traffic amidst huge number of shoppers coming from Dimapur.

EDBA: East Dimapur Business Association (EDBA) has announced that all shops and business establishments will be open on April 29 to allow the public to stock essential items. EDBA also stated that further updates on the resumption of the indefinite shutter down will be notified.
MCCI: Meanwhile, Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has informed public that all shops and business establishments in Mokokchung would reopen on April 29, Monday.
MCCI president Tsukti Longkumer and general secretary Limalenden Longkumer informed this in a press release but also added that the shutter down strike will resume from April 30. MCCI also requested the public not to resort to panic buying during the window period.
MCCI also stated that in view of lack of satisfactory response from the state government, the indefinite shutter down called by the CNCCI would continue until the demands of the business community were met.
It further cautioned traders against taking advantage of the situation by resorting to illegitimate business practices and warned that any trader found indulging in such activities would face punishment.
Public has also been requested to report complaints or grievances to the MCCI by contacting 9436006062, 8415043591, 9436605461.

:- Alleging that the BJP has made the entire country a “detention camp”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said the CAA and NRC will be scrapped if opposition bloc INDIA forms government at the Centre.

Addressing an election rally here in support of four TMC candidates in Assam, she alleged that there will be “no democracy and elections if Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns to power” for the third consecutive term.

“They (BJP) made the entire country a detention camp… I have never seen such a dangerous election in my life,” Banerjee said.

She asserted that her party TMC loves all religions and does not want people to be divided on religious lines.

“If the INDIA bloc wins, there will not be the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Uniform Civil Code. We will repeal all discriminatory laws,” Banerjee said at the rally.

She appealed to people to vote for all four Trinamool Congress candidates in Assam in the Lok Sabha polls and announced that her party would contest all 126 assembly seats in the 2026 state polls.

“This is just a trailer and the final is yet to come. I will come again,” Banerjee added.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren SIngh on April 15 slammed Congress, accusing it of "appeasement politics" and saying that had Congress fenced the border, the situation wouldn't have become this bad. "Congress has always done appeasement policy. What is happening today is because of them. If they had fenced the border in their time, the influx hadn't happened. Who is Congress to tell about administrative facilities. But, BJP says not an inch of demography or integrity will be altered, but will restore peace with discussions," he said.

In a bid to restore peace and stability in the embattled state of Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh extended gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his assurance during a recent visit. Singh stated the confidence instilled among the populace following Shah's promises, while simultaneously pointing fingers at the Congress party for exacerbating the turmoil gripping the region.

Singh's remarks came in the wake of Amit Shah's visit to Manipur, where he addressed concerns over border security, the Free Movement Regime (FMR), and the issue of illegal immigrants. Shah's reassurance resonated with Manipuris, with Singh highlighting the Home Minister's commitment to preserving the unity and integrity of the state under BJP's governance.

"The unity and integrity of Manipur won't be compromised under BJP's watch," stated Shah during his visit, echoing the sentiments echoed by Singh. The Chief Minister lambasted the Congress party, attributing the current state of affairs to their historical "appeasement politics." Singh contended that had Congress fortified the borders during their tenure, the influx of migrants could have been prevented, averting the present crisis.

Shah, in a rally held in Imphal, reiterated the BJP's steadfast commitment to preventing Manipur's disintegration, vowing to prioritize peace restoration in Prime Minister Modi's third term. "We will not let Manipur break down," declared Shah, underscoring BJP's resolve to tackle the root causes of the ongoing ethnic violence.
