Someone recently sent some harsh criticism, suggesting that we limit the types of models we feature. They said...

"These models are not real people! By showcasing “flawless” bodies, you’re reinforcing toxic, unattainable beauty standards that have plagued society for decades. Why do you keep promoting these unrealistic standards? Much of this so-called “art” caters to a narrow, privileged group of people who already fit the mold."

Despite the feedback’s positive intention, when you dig deeper, there’s irony and cruelty in the critique. Referring to art models as “not real people” puts them in a separate category, detached from the vulnerabilities, challenges, and insecurities we all face as an inevitable part of life...

We've just removed almost every image we've ever posted to FB. While this platform propagates endless division, misinformation, and negative messages about humanity, respectful works of figurative fine art are banned as obscene. Recently, AI moderators have removed dozens of posts (that have been up for years) and are warning that the account will be suspended. Not only is our shared humanity deemed obscene, but it's not even humans imposing that judgment. We will NOT be posting any more images to FB.

Considering the background of politics, extreme weather, floods, and wars, these are intense and uncertain times. It often seems like social media is a battlefield.

Then I come back to Model Society.

While I'm sure that our members and supporters have diverse opinions and beliefs about the world, we all share an appreciation for human beauty as a work of art. In this space, instead of pointing fingers at each other, we point towards a higher ideal. We focus our attention on celebrating our shared humanity.

The models, photographers, artists, and supporters of Model Society give me hope. For me, this is deeply comforting. When I compare what I see at Model Society to what's happening on many other social platforms, I'm filled with gratitude and deep respect.

I wish everyone could glimpse the human spirit – as it is portrayed by those who fill our community with such exquisite beauty and light.

I often feel powerless to impact the forces of history. But at least here, at Model Society, I know (deep down) that models, photographers, and artists are making a positive contribution.
