Photographer Marcin Wilk discusses his travels, and relates conceptual exercises, and details the locales and experiences depicted in his photography.

Marcin Wilk, aka Marching Wolf, is a New Orleans-based Polish photographer and traveler. Trained in philosophy and international relations, and interested in history, art and social phenomena, he applies both his education and passions to his photography. He focuses on urban and rural decay, portraits of ordinary people, and landscapes.

When you work with visual media, you work at several presentation layers, each a visual layer of its own with its own specs - b&w or color, zoomed in, zoomed out, tilted, textured.

When I shoot photos, I edit the images, cropping and coloring and framing. Then, when I want to present those images, I work at another level of visual presentation - FB post, or FB reel, or IG post or reel, or on my YT channel, or Vimeo, or as an image or movie file on a cloud storage platform....

When I post here, I go through another editing process, so the photos from this shoot with Kat catch your eye.

This slideshow template begins my effort to learn After Effects for visual media production, to make more fluid, transparent pieces that grab your attention.

We'll see how well it works.

Just about one year ago I landed in Chicago. Just weeks later, Ashlynn at Paws & Claws agreed to work with me to shoot video for a fundraiser in the park.

I was shooting my first gig in Chicago.

Such a difference between the B&W and the color versions.

They're both really beautiful images, and still such different feeling between them. The b&w is so serene and strong. The color, so rich and sensual.

Two movie ideas in particular nest deeply in my heart, and both of them are music driven.

One has an ost that's basically my playlist of the last 40 years of listening to and loving music. The subject matter, the story, whatever it is, is important, but it hits deeper cuz of the soundtrack.

The second: roughly the same idea, except the music is all my own compositions, covers, arrangements, recordings. A variation would be my compositions, but newly arranged and recorded by great musicians.

Rhubarb would definitely be on the ost of the first film. My own cover, on the second. The song always ends too soon. T-cophony's arrangement is gorgeous, their adoration evident.

Wonderful friends loaned their beautiful house to Lily and I for a couple hours for a shoot.

Lily's acting and modeling come out in these shots, for sure, and she took full advantage of the props and set.

And we didn't even get out into the garden on this visit.

Video stills from a production I shot for Tellin' Tales Theatre, a theater group that's been around in Chicago for 28 years, reaching out to the community of variously abled actors, actresses, storytellers.

This performance articulated the performers' stories in humor, drama, in-your-face, IRL, in dance and rhythm, hard words, motion.

Amazing and beautiful.

Design gives value in every technology. The good design I've found in this rig makes me happy. Things just work.

Even from the first shoot - a handheld affair at a wedding ceremony/dance party, where I used manual focus with focus peaking for the first time ever - I got results that still surprise me when I look at them two years later.

With the waves of red highlight undulating across the surface of things as I pulled focus, I felt powerful.

Equipment doesn't make a person a good camera operator, but it definitely makes a difference in how it operates and the quality of the raw footage, and in the delight of operating it.

Isabella and I finished up a huge video project of her gig at the Logan Center Cafe, and I'm reviewing photo and video stills as I wrap it up.

This debuts my production services efforts here in Chicago.

I'm shooting with a Z Cam E2 S6 cinema camera and a 35mm f1.5 Rokinon lens, Rode NTG5 boom mic, and an Amaran 200Sx light with a Phottix 105 light dome.

We shot almost twenty takes between the two actors/angles.

I use Premiere Pro for all my video editing.

Lots learned in producing this little piece that gets huge thanks to the actors and writer.
