Last Sunday at Museumplein, National Animal Rights Day 2024! This international event was held for the fourth time in Amsterdam, and this year took place in 163 cities worldwide. 🌎

It started originally in New York City in 2011. The goal every year is to commemorate the animal victims who die every year because of humans, to educate the public about cruelty-free alternatives and to celebrate the progress that has been made for animal rights over the years.

The motto is “Our Planet. Theirs Too.”

In the meanwhile in Amsterdam Noord… 👀 New all vegan bar Subcult coming soon!! A longterm dream/project of friends Caitlin and Jort, now finally about to happen!

They will start off as a neighbourhood bar with some vegan pastry and snacks on the side. Later in the year they will host pop-ups and are aiming to offer all day breakfast! Deliberately vegan, their manifesto reads “Don’t eat if it has a beat.”

Located at Spreeuwenpark 13 (known previously as Café Simon de Wit), near Meeuwenlaan. Includes also a big terrace on the pavement across the street. They are planning to open in June!

📅 Coming week on Saturday May 11th!! Event for animal rights activists in the Netherlands. The Animal Liberation Summit is a day full of workshops where you can elevate your activism, meet fellow activists and get to know various organisations active for animals.

📍 It takes place at Plantage Dok, a social centre near Plantage Middenlaan in central Amsterdam.

🖊️ Entrance is donation based. There is no need to register for the event itself but if you want to join for lunch and dinner you should sign up for that (at 'Practical Information' at the website www.animalliberationsummit.nl).

Vegan couple Margo and Ayden started vegan pastry shop ‘Margo’s’ in May 2021 in the Jordaan. Known for top viennoiserie, sub sandwiches and everything tahini!

The new place is expected to open in summer. Located at Bellamyplein, on the corner with Jan Hanzenstraat.

Completely vegetarian menu where most options are vegan or can be made vegan. Open every day of the week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. From pastries to pizzas to cocktails. All in all Vegitalian is a big, convenient restaurant with many possibilities and really an asset to the neighbourhood. They opened last autumn in Amsterdam at the busy Bilderdijkstraat.

PRESSURE CAMPAIGNING • Breeding animals for fur is forbidden in the Netherlands, selling fur not yet! While many fashion brands stopped using fur (for ethical reasons and because of activist pressure) some of them continue to use fur in their products. We're talking big companies like Dior, Luis Vuitton or Max Mara. They are the target of a worldwide campaign against fur, including in Amsterdam. ✊

New packages from Danerolles to make your own vegan pain au chocolat and cinnamon rolls! Felt a bit like a child playing bakery with the little patches of dough and tiny chocolate sticks 🥹🥹🥹 haha. Quite a nice snack. Available at Albert Heijn and Jumbo.

You know dried soy chunks (aka TVP) but do you know dried seitan chunks?? Affordable and high in protein (69 gr per 100 gr). Just soak 'em for 15 minutes, squeeze the water out and fry in some oil until golden brown. Of course you have to add some flavour or throw them in a stew or something, the creativity of the chef!

Pick your favourite ingredients (more than 40!) and choose which soup base you want. Spicy Sichuan? Creamy Tom Kha? Or umami rich Japanese miso? Ten minutes later you are handed a bowl of steaming hot, rich noodle soup!

MOGU Malatang opened last year in Bos en Lommer and is inspired by the Chinese malatang streetfood places. Here they are fully vegetarian but almost everything is vegan. Perfect comfortfood for grey Amsterdam days and healthy as well!

Top ingredient for your kitchen pantry, this gingerjuice (97%) from Zonnatura. Use it for gingershots (pure or mixed with fruitjuice) or in cooking, like an Asian stirfry. Gingerjuice is very strong so a little bit usually suffices.

New small exhibition at Melkweg Expo. 'Siblings of the Soil' offers a non-western perspective on ecofeminism - the philosophy which sees the oppression of women and the destruction of the environment as interconnected.

'In the conversation about climate justice, the experiences and voices of women of colour are often ignored—despite the fact that they are disproportionately affected by the effects of climate change. Siblings of the Soil focuses on amplifying their voices and their work, as a powerful recognition of their crucial role within these complex and urgent issues.'

All international recipes, inspired by his grandmothers who first taught him how to bake. Sweet and savoury, some recipes more challenging than others and of course everything vegan.

Opened a year ago, Mister NATA is a pastry shop specialised in the famous Portuguese pastel de nata. Straightforward but elegant little tarts, made from puff pastry filled with custard. Anyone who's ever been to Portugal surely will know them. And yes here they have a vegan version as well!

Tea lovers rejoice! Eindhoven based 'vegan bubble tea brand' Tea stories recently opened a pop-up take-away in the Jordaan! Much more than just bubble tea, they offer LOTS of drinks! Different teas, matcha, coffee drinks, iceteas, sweet cold drinks. Check out the menu for yourself!

Note that in Amsterdam they just have the drinks menu as well as mochi, no pastries or savoury options. Lasts until the 9th of March! Open on Saturdays and Sundays.

'Toaster pastries', a snack invented in the US in the 60s. Like a large cookie with icing and a filling. If you heat it up in a toaster, the filling becomes soft. Very sweet!
