🛒 There are the familiar Asian stores in the Nieuwmarkt area, but this lesser known one in the west might even be better! Hong Kong Superstore at Kinkerstraat.

Not a vegan store but they have a lot of stuff interesting for vegans. A very wide range of products - everything you need and then plenty of new stuff to discover!

Open from Tuesday to Saturday.

🍰 New at Albert Heijn, this raw vegan cacao hazelnut pie! Creamy and very rich in flavour. Based on cashew nuts, hazelnuts and coconut oil. They are also glutenfree and free from refined sugars - sweetened with date syrup and coconut blossom sugar. The package contains 6 pieces, price €8,99.

Find them in the freezer amongst other glutenfree products, at the bakery section. They also have other new raw vegan cakes: flavours ‘Strawberry & Mango Passionfruit’ and ‘Cacao & Tiramisu’.

V E G A N B A K L A V A 🤩🇹🇷 Perhaps the only place in Amsterdam offering vegan baklava? At döner place theirs is with pistachio! They also offer vegan döner, lahmacun (Turkish pizza) and more (their menu is not fully vegan however). Located in the east of Amsterdam near shopping centre Oostpoort.

Sticker spotted saying “CHEESE = CRUEL”. 🌱 Before I went vegan, I was first vegetarian for a few years. I already knew what veganism was, but didn’t fully get it. Talking about it with other animal rights activists who were vegan gave me more knowledge about the way non-human animals are treated in animal agriculture. Going grocery shopping with them, and enjoying a home cooked meal or restaurant dinner showed me how veganism is lived, and that it’s not that difficult. When I finally learned what happens to day-old baby chicks in the egg industry (they are thrown alive in a shredder) I was so disgusted I decided to go vegan straightaway. I felt liberated, no longer contributing to the cruelty.

🐄 So what is cruel about cheese? Well, the milk (to make the cheese) is stolen from the mother cow. Her baby calf (for whom the milk was destined, because cows don’t produce milk just like that) is being sent to the slaughterhouse if he’s a male. She herself will go to the slaughterhouse as well when she can’t produce milk anymore. Female calfs end up as dairy cows, and the cycle starts again.

The dairy and meat industry exist hand in hand. 🩸

🗺️ Big tip for all vegan TOURISTS (or those new to Amsterdam)! maker of the best travel maps I ever saw, finally made an Amsterdam edition! It’s brand-new (came out last month) and filled with tips by locals, taking you to the more interesting and lesser-known spots, including ones outside of the city center. There are also a few favourite vegan places on the list, like , and ! You will find also some practical information on the map about life in Amsterdam.

B E A N S & L E G U M E S 🫛🫘🌱 Gradually supermarkets have introduced more beans and legumes to their assortment, a good thing! They’re tasty, healthy and a part of many traditional vegan dishes allover the world. 🙌

Besides the greater variety, you can find also more and more convenience products, like beans that come already in a sauce and are ready to serve!

Vegan food at the monthly at Westergas! Every first Sunday of the month with lots of crafts, art, fashion, live music and of course food. The amount of vegan options is limited but there are a few all vegan regulars, the best people, so support your locals!

🎋 The brand-new Tuk Tuk food truck of Bamboozled. From Joey and Sherilyn of seitan brand .amsterdam! At the food truck they offer fresh, warm pita sandwiches filled with either Rendang or Babi Ketjap. They have Indonesian roots so you can trust the flavours of these dishes to be legit! Of course made from their own seitan. New: you can also find Bamboozled (meaning ‘tricked’ 😉) nowadays every Saturday at the Lindengracht Market!!

🇧🇷 All vegan pastry options with Brazilian roots by . Alfajores, dulce de leche brownie, brigadier, banoffee pie, empada, vegan pão de queijo and more! Everything is made without refined sugars and a lot is gluten-free.

🌶️ You like it spicy? Be sure to pay a visit to the stall of .nl, the hot sauce brand of Claude, born in Aruba. Hot sauces (e.g. with papaya or soursop), bbq sauces (options with tamarind, guava, pineapple rum and more), grill seasoning and the latest addition to his assortment: hot agave. Agave infused with chipotle or habanero peppers, and uffff agave crispy chili!

🍰 More pastry options by ! Eclairs, ‘ham & cheese’ croissant, pain au Nutella, pesto ‘feta’ roll, various brownies, cheesecakes and more! Everything she bakes is gluten-free as well.

🍄‍🟫 Not fully vegan, but the stall of is worth a mention. Besides their own stuff like vegan kimchi, black garlic and dill pickles they also sell vegan garum (from ), a fermented umami flavor bomb normally made with fish, but this one is made from mushrooms!

Vegan saucijzenbroodje! De Vegetarische Slager veganised their former vegetarian recipe, so now they’re all vegan! If you’re not familiar with them, they’re made out of puff pastry, filled with seasoned minced ‘meat’. Available in all shops, which are located in bigger Dutch train stations. They are served warm, price €2,45

Alternatively, they’re also selling the all vegan ‘satébroodje’ at KIOSK, which they introduced a few years ago.

Vegan coconut macaroons! 🙌 Easy to make yourself (being mostly just grated coconut and sugar) but rare to find in the supermarket. These are dipped in chocolate.

Find them in the glutenfree section in bigger Jumbo supermarkets.

New short comic by artist , about the story of the cow who escaped from the former slaughterhouse at Food Center Amsterdam. Available at and radical bookstore , price €6.

The comic is part of a new initiative by Schalken to establish a monument for the over two million cows who died in the slaughterhouse between 1984 and 2017. The terrain of the Food Center is currently being transformed into a residential area with a city park.
Apart from commemorating the animals, Schalken envisions the monument to be also an appeal to us to eat in a different way - plantbased, so animals can be free from human exploitation. For more info check www.koeienmonument.nl
