As a teenager, he frequented the hottest record shops in the city, always on the lookout for the latest and greatest tracks before they hit the mainstream.
In the early 1970s, Tony's approach to mixing records was profoundly influenced by notable DJs such as David Rodriguez (Limelight), Richie Kaczor (Club Hollywood), and Nicky Siano (then at the Roundtable). These influences helped shape his unique DJ style, which he honed during his early gigs. By 1976, Tony's talent and influence were widely recognized, earning him a spot as one of the Top DJs in America by Billboard Magazine. His top 10 most played songs, reported to all three major music industry publications, significantly influenced the music scene in New York and across the United States.
Tony Smith's legacy continues to thrive through his show “Classic Beats & Rhythms,” which airs every Thursday evening on the Sirius/XM Studio 54 channel. His devoted fanbase, known as “The Smithettes,” actively keeps his memory and influence alive, celebrating his contributions to music.
