Our Story
ROOM EIGHT: NEW YORK (aka “Room Eight”) is an online media site that offers bold and courageous perspectives on politics, sports, law, education and more. The site originally developed its roots in New York’s politics at the turn of the 21st century. It was the brain-child of Mr. Ben Smith -and a few other NYC political activists- seeking to create a colony for community activists and political-writers, wherein political information beyond mainstream mediums could be disseminated.
It was originally named: “ROOM EIGHT: NEW YORK POLITICS". At that point, newspaperman Smith was employed at the New York Daily News. He later moved on to “Politico”, and even later “Buzz Feed” (editor). “Room Eight” has seen a few incarnations over time, and is still celebrated for its fearless approach to riveting stories hardly told anywhere else. Room Eight’s distinguished writers represented a range of viewpoints, backgrounds, and writing styles. The masterful crafting of news stories by famed blogger and contributing writer, Rock Hackshaw, has captivated the public since 2005. Acclaimed writer and public servant Larry Littlefield, has superbly reported on fiscal issues around government spending, and his enlightened public policy prescriptions are a must read. Howard “Gatemouth” Graubard was an early fixture on the site, with his provocative style, wit and bravado. As it relates to New York politics, Howard is arguably one of the top historians alive.
These three key-writers developed a large esoteric following back then, which led to almost one million internet hits during a summer month of 2008. Other contributing writers included: Dr. Caprice Alves (now deceased), Dominic Carter (formerly of “New York One” Television Station), Jerry Skurnik (Prime New York) and others. Disclaimer: The present online “Room Eight” site is edited for clarity, but not for political or editorial perspectives. The views of one contributing writer does not necessarily represent the views of all contributing writers. Room Eight encourages and protects freedom of truthful reporting and expression. Political activists are welcomed here and can make contributions and additions to the ongoing discourse.
