- Understanding Plastics Recycling Symbols

Derbyshire Dales can take Plastic Recycling Symbols 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 in the blue lid recycling bin / or blue bag if on a sack collection.

Plastic symbols 6 & 7 must go in the Refuse grey lid bin or black sacks.

Symbol 1: PETG or PETE
Symbol 1 with the acronym PETE PETG plastic. Also known as PETE, this symbol represents polyethylene terephthalate, which is commonly used for soft drink bottles, mineral water containers, and fruit juice containers, and cooking oil containers.

Symbol 2: HDPE
Symbol 2 with the acronym HDPE indicates one of the most commonly used plastics, HDPE (which stands for high-density polyethylene). HDPE plastic is used for a number of different purposes but is widely considered the plastic of choice for containers for items like cleaning agents, milk, detergents, and washing soap thanks to its low weight and high strength.

Symbol 3: PVC or Vinyl
Plastic material that exhibit symbol 3 with the letter “V” represent PVC plastic or polyvinyl chloride. You may come across this plastic in trays for sweets and fruit.

Symbol 4: LDPE
Symbol 4 with the acronym LDPE indicates that the plastic is made from LDPE plastic, which stands for low-density polyethylene. This plastic comes in the form of shopping bags, highly-resistant sacks, and crushed bottles.

Symbol 5: PP
PP, or polypropylene plastic, is appropriately marked by the number five symbol including the acronym PP. Thanks to its durability, strength, and low weight, this plastic is one of the safer types of plastic making it ideal for ketchup bottles and medicine bottles.

Symbol 6: Styrene, or PS
Styrene plastic, also known as polystyrene, is marked with symbol 6 that includes the acronym PS. This plastic is commonly used in toys, hard packing, refrigerator trays, cosmetic bags, costume jewellery, CD cases, and vending cups.

Symbol 7: Other
Symbol 7 including the word “OTHER” stands for “other plastics,” which include, but are not limited to, acrylic plastic, polycarbonate plastic, polylactic fibers, nylon, and fiberglass. Not every plastic can be easily recycled.

Great article in the Guardian on the Stinking Hellebores on Scarthin Rock .
Our conservation volunteers work hard to clear the brambles from around the hellebores & numbers are increasing every year.
Did you know that Kew Gardens took seed from the hellebores on Scarthin Rock for their Millennium Seedbank?

A reminder that Derbyshire Dales residents can now sign up to our garden waste scheme for 2024/25 👇
www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/gardenwaste

The price for households subscribing to the scheme, now in its 4th year is £56 - the first increase since the scheme was introduced in 2021, though early bird subscribers in year one could claim a one-off discount price of £35.

A Council spokesperson said: “We have held the price of the garden waste subscription scheme at £50 per bin for the last three years since the scheme was introduced in 2021.

"During this time we had a change in disposal site for garden waste, due to the sudden closure of the local Vital Earth Facility. Unfortunately this has increased the costs of running the garden waste service.”

Residents who sign up before 10 March will be entered into a draw to have the chance of getting their subscription fee for the year 2024/25 refunded. All subscribers who beat that deadline go into a prize draw, with 20 lucky residents being refunded 1 x £56 subscription fee.

Those who pay by direct debit will have their subscription automatically renewed for 2024/25 at the charge of £56 per subscription.

Subscribers’ 2024/25 orange bin sticker will arrive before 1 April if residents subscribe now.

- Garden Waste

For those who don’t already have a green lidded bin, garden waste bin (which is the same size as a blue recycling bin), we have a paid subscription scheme where you can have your garden waste taken away to be composted.

How do I sign up to the Garden Waste Subscription Scheme?
Derbyshire Dales’ residents need to opt-in to our garden waste subscription scheme. Subscriptions for this year starting from 1 April 2024 are available now. Follow the link to subscribe:

https://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/garden-waste/garden-waste-subscription

New to the scheme: On joining the garden waste scheme we will provide you with a tamper-proof bin sticker and a green lid bin. Apart from a non-collection over New Year and Christmas, your garden waste will be collected fortnightly from the start of April to the end of March the following year.

What can I put in my Garden Waste Bin?
• Plants
• Weeds
• Hedge trimmings
• Branches (small or broken up)
• Leaves
• Grass cuttings
• Bark
• Bedding from vegetarian pets (e.g.rabbits and guinea pigs)

What happens to my Garden Waste that is collected?
The material you separate out of your gardens, is collected on behalf of the District Council by Serco Limited and taken to one of two sites: Biffa in Etwall, Derby or Suez in Waterswallows, Buxton. At these sites, Garden Waste is subject to a process of In Vessel Composting to create compost and soil improvers.

Vessel composting first shreds the garden waste and then mixes it. It then draws air through the garden waste over a period of up to 2 days and is then stored for around 8 weeks until it’s usable as compost. It is finally then sieved to remove any contaminants. The end product is used for restoration, landscaping and agriculture.
