As we’re close to the 5 year anniversary of the Butte County fires and as I sit in the aftermath of another near-miss of natural disasters, I think heavily about Paradise.
I remember being evacuated and being anxious about the future of my home and studio. Anxious, about the future for my friends and neighbors and the fate of their homes and families.
The timing around this little project seemed to touch a lot of people in California and beyond. The beautiful music and words of my dear friend and musical compatriot, Brant Roscoe, guiding us all home in some way.
This song came to me first as an engineer and second as a performer. As an engineer, I distinctly remember wanting it to sound distant, almost removed as a listener; as though the voices of all the music were coming from the hills.
As a performer, I wanted to make bass lines that sounded like the ebb and flow of the tide. Those healing water so close, yet so far away.
I’m proud of this project, both for its direct ability to raise awareness and funds for people who lost their homes, but also for the newfound glue that healed the relationship of my band and my recording life.
It’s a benchmark for me; as a time I found empathy when I didn’t really have it before, and as a time when I reconnected with a passion for being a musician and a recording engineer.
5 years is a long time, but the specifics of the situation matter so little when the world is still healing. We all just need a little idea of Paradise.
