On December 6, Washington, DC's COGENTS will release a special collaborative EP with the endless creative force that is NEIL FALLON (known by most as the frontman for Germantown, Maryland's legendary institution Clutch).

Friends for years and previous collaborators (see Black Clouds' track "Sa****um Sunday School" or Neil's appearances on the Rigs of Dad Prodcast*), Ross Hurt and Neil Fallon created the forthcoming "Desolace" EP under the simple guise of "what would it sound like if we scored a future classic sci fi flick that we haven't seen yet?" The result is 6 tracks of ambient and post-everything sonic bliss that will be a gift to all fans of cinematically-inspired music come the sixth day of December (guaranteed to bring you more utility than six geese a-laying**).

As a bonus, "Tabernacle" is paired with "Entirely Unworthy of This Creation," the album's closer.

Former Frodus bassist Nate Burke returns… this time, wielding synths instead of guitars to create a diverse array of poetic post-punk ambient music with nods to dark/synthwave. These works are heavily influenced by Burke’s visits to Tokyo over the years, where there is adventure in any possible direction; the curious and confrontational nature of beauty; and the way wandering can remake a person.

“Sketches of Tokyo” is a collection of previously unreleased compositions accumulated over recent years. “Empty Orchestra” is two songs that were previously only available as Bandcamp-exclusive bonus tracks for the “Enter the Ghost” album (2018).

Adam McGrath, of the tenured band Cave In, and as seen in Clouds, Nomad Stones, and Wear Your Wounds, fell into a deep sleep. He dreamt of a place called METHUEN, the first place to shape him and the original world of which he inhabited. This was the northern Massachusetts working class town that he had grown up in. He traveled through the streets and backroads and saw many characters along the way.

He crossed paths with Alice, chained in her “Jar of Flies,” Mr. Beck with all his “mutations,” and even Sir Zeppelin himself, which had Led him to the “III.” He made it “On the Beach” where the Boys and brothers Wilson harmonized with the sun and found shaky Uncle Neil, who kept us all Young while turning that califrown upside down. He saw the times of future pasts with mix cassette tapes dubbed with nineties hardcore seven inches and LP’s discovered from word of mouth, xeroxed fanzines, and mail order purchase.

Driving his mother’s 1990 Mercury Sable station wagon down Baremeadow Lane, the tape reels spun in the boombox wedged between the front seats, as it screamed decibels into the night. This dream world would be the place he would welcome visits from the family and friends he had lost along the way and saw them unchanged by time. The fabric of this world had been colored and illuminated wholeheartedly by the fantastical and sometimes horrific musings of Mr. Vonnegut, Mr. McCarthy, and Sai King.

Acoustic and electric 6 strings would sound out the mold. Distorted signals through hot vacuum tube transmitters would burn. Demon wind blown into a melodica called for battle while black and white keys engaged in sparkling the sound. The journey would be more important than the destination.

But then he awoke.

Was it a dream, a vision, a nightmare or a song?

Making sense of this would have to be a solo endeavor.

Adam McGrath’s first solo album, “Methuen’s Lot,” is the roadmap to this fever dream. Produced and engineered by Stephen Brodsky, mixed by Adam Taylor, and mastered by James Plotkin, the album sees release on October 4, 2024 via Pax Aeternum.

Conners on drums.

Steve produced and engineered "Methuen's Lot" and will also be celebrating a bit of a milestone this Friday (September 27), as his own solo debut album "Expose Your Overdubs" will be commemorating 25 years via an expansive, deluxe edition of the album totally a whopping 25 tracks. You'll be able to stream/download that on any/all platforms.

Then, on October 4, Adam's album "Methuen's Lot" hits everywhere far and wide. In the meantime, keep an eye out for another preview track ASAP and a full album preview from our friends at Rue Morgue in subsequent days.

Even when they're not Cave In-ing, the men of Cave In are always up to something... (and we love it).

25 years ago, fresh on the heels of the release of his first solo album, Stephen Brodsky went into WMBR and cut an acoustic live set, including this version of "Burning Down the Billboards," a song "Creative Eclipses," a Cave In EP from the same year.

The cover photo for this preview track was originally shot by Cave In bandmate Adam McGrath and appeared on the original back cover for "Expose Your Overdubs."

Metal Injection is the only place today to hear both Adam McGrath's debut solo single "Betray the Dream" and an unearthed 1999 recording of Stephen Brodsky performing "Burning Down the Billboards" live on WMBR.

The Cave In duo will also be performing together at next month's Metal Injection Festival, being held at Brooklyn Monarch & Meadows September 21 & 22.

PAD176: COBRA NOIR "Barricades" [2006] [reissue]

"Barricades" is the second and final full-length album from cult Montreal, Quebec metallic hardcore outfit COBRA NOIR. Eight songs in length, this record was originally issued in 2006 by Yellow Dog Records (12" vinyl) and Chainsaw Safety (compact disc). 2023 marks the first time that "Barricades" has ever been available digitally!

All of the proceeds from the sale of Cobra Noir digital albums will be distributed to charities and causes determined quarterly by a committee that includes band and community members dedicated toward bringing assistance and relief toward dynamically changing conditions at home and abroad. Along with cities like Bremen (Germany) and Boston (United States), Montreal, Quebec (Canada) was an absolutely essential hub in the progression and exponential rise of proper metallic hardcore from the mid 90's onward.

Here in the United States, many in the hardcore scene of the mid 90's first got exposure to the Quebec strain via bands like Ire, One Eyed God Prophecy, Drift, and Seized. This was followed by a wave that included The Black Hand and Born Dead Icons amongst others. Having already shared members many times over, the next wave (which rose in rapid succession) featured even more collaboration amongst many of the same players via bands like Cursed and the band whose catalog Pax Aeternum is proud to now be bringing into the digital realm: COBRA NOIR.
