A is an important way to set intentions for the upcoming year. It doesn’t need to be epic. Just get outside.

Here is my Big Meadows Meander from earlier this morning.

The air was brisk with lots of wind gusts. After watching the sunrise from one of the South District overlooks, I knew I would prefer to spend most of my time on the trail today in the open meadow, walking through CCC history.

Sure I would feel the brunt of the wind, but after a couple trees down on Skyline Drive, I can get a little nervous. (Though that didn’t stop me from picking up Eaton Hollow trail afterwards…but hey it’s .4 miles. I could push through my fear for that 😂)

Happy 2025!

A very special thank you to all my guests this year. I enjoyed our conversations and appreciate you sharing your stories with me.

If you haven’t listened to all of my 2024 (or even older) episodes, now is a great time to dig into the archives.

Looking forward to many more memories in 2025.

Happy New Year!

and see you on the trail…

Doing it for the views….

Hiker tip: Hike the section of AT behind Loft Mountain campground once it is closed for the season. You not only get these long range winter views, but you also get a surreal experience of being the only one around. Especially on a weekday morning.

If you ever come to the Hazeltop Ridge overlook off Skyline Drive you may be curious about this trail that wanders into the woods. It’s called Powell Mountain Trail and it goes 3.6 miles and meets up with the VA 759.

I broke this into 2 parts because of my limited time frame to hike during the week. First I hiked the bottom half from the SNP boundary and then I came up to Skyline Drive and hiked the upper half.

But if you aren’t looking to complete all the trails of Shenandoah (like me!), I even suggest just getting a mile or two so as an out and back to stretch your legs and experience some solitude in the woods.

Starting this morning’s AT hike from Ivy Creek Overlook.

Fun fact: I have seen many sunrises in Shenandoah National Park but have not stayed for a sunset.

This week I have two podcast interviews I will be recording. It’s been fun to dive into the podcast again and chat with new and old friends.

Have you listened to my episode with Rosalie Haizlett yet? Drop a comment and let me know!

Season 10* is underway!

*If you reached out or suggested a topic, please know that I am doing some following up but this time of year things slow down a lot due to travel and family time during the holidays. It’s on my list for January. Promise!!!

Thank you for coming on Hike and talking to me about your art and recent book, “Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountain”.

Listeners will get a behind the scenes look into the creative process as she talks about her own personal journey.

I discovered Rosalie’s art this past summer during a visit to a mountain cabin near Davis, West Virginia. I love Rosalie’s illustration and style, and I am excited to bring her to Hike listeners.

Head over to -> https://rosaliehaizlett.com to find out how to pick up her art prints, books and more.

A very frozen Dark Hollow falls from the other day.

Who else likes to explore waterfalls in the wintry weather?

I did this as a longer loop but this hike can be done as an easier out and back. I think it is a hike for all seasons!

📍Trailhead: Dark Hollow Falls Parking Area (mile 50.7)

Distance: 1.4-mile out and back
Difficulty: Moderate (some steep, slippery and rocky sections!)
Hike time: 1 hour 15 minutes (average)
Elevation Gain: 440 feet

Every hike I go on in Shenandoah…I am constantly looking for remnants of times past.

Like these rock walls.

I also love seeing the outlines of the roads that once crisscrossed the Blue Ridge mountains. Late fall and winter are perfect times to uncover them.

The more you know about the history of the land you hike, the more you appreciate what you have access to today.

A touching story of gratitude!

Give me….rocks! And more rocks! All the trails with rocks!

Fun times on the AT, Blackrock, Trayfoot, Paine Run loop last week.

Shenandoah National Park has some spectacular rock formations though. The geology nerd in me is digging all of it.

A view from today’s hike. This was from the AT portion which takes you through the Doyle’s River overlook off Skyline Drive.

Big Run Loop ✅

Notable wildlife sightings: I saw a 10 point buck on my drive in + a bobcat on my way out.

I’ve gotten close to 120 hiking miles in during the month of November. That is a personal best which I feel isn’t too bad for a day hiker! 😜

I’ve also tallied over 24k feet of elevation gain this month. This month has tested me as a hiker and given me much more confidence in what I can achieve outdoors.

Podcast update: I am scheduling interviews (yay!!!)

Surely there must be a story behind the 2 buses. We saw an old hunting camp sign nailed onto one of the trees nearby.

The wind blowing the curtains around was just a little eerie. Time to walk faster…
