Shampoo originated in India. The word "shampoo" comes from the Hindi word "chāmpo," which means "to massage." The concept of using herbal extracts and oils for hair care originated in ancient India.

In the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and India, people discovered the importance of maintaining clean and healthy hair. They realized that natural ingredients and substances could be used to cleanse and beautify their locks.

In ancient India, individuals turned to herbs and plant extracts to keep their hair clean. They would create pastes using a combination of ingredients like soapberries, hibiscus flowers, amla (Indian gooseberry), and shikakai (Acacia concinna). These natural cleansers were effective in removing dirt, excess oil, and impurities from the hair and scalp.

As trade routes expanded and cultures interacted, knowledge of these hair care practices spread to different parts of the world. It was in the 18th century that the concept of shampoo, as we know it today, started to emerge.

Europeans, particularly the upper class, adopted the Indian tradition of using herbal hair cleansers. However, instead of the traditional plant-based pastes, they began experimenting with different ingredients to create liquid formulations. These early shampoos were typically made from a mixture of soap and herbs.

Fast forward to the 20th century, advancements in science and technology revolutionized the field of hair care. In 1927, German chemist Hans Schwarzkopf created the first liquid shampoo that was commercially available. This breakthrough product marked a significant milestone in the history of shampoo.

Over time, shampoo formulations continued to evolve, incorporating various ingredients such as surfactants, conditioners, and fragrances. Pankaj Udhas, the renowned Indian ghazal and playback singer, is scheduled to perform in Durban next month. The concert will take place on July 29 at the Durban ICC, followed by another performance on July 30 at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.

With a career that began in 1980 with the release of his ghazal album titled "Aahat," Udhas has recorded numerous hits over the years. Some of his notable albums include "Mukarar" (1981), "Tarrannum" (1982), "Mehfil" (1983), "Pankaj Udhas Live at Royal Albert Hall" (1984), "Nayaab" (1985), and "Aafreen" (1986). He gained further recognition for his song "Chitthi Aayee Hai" from the 1986 film "Naam." Udhas has also contributed as a playback singer for several Hindi films and has performed in live concerts worldwide.

The concert in Durban is organized by BluBlood Entertainment, a renowned events management company. Osman Osman, the Managing Director of the company, expressed their decision to bring Udhas to South Africa due to the overwhelming requests from fans in recent years. Osman highlighted Udhas's extensive fan base in South Africa and emphasized that his music resonates deeply with the local audience.

Ghazals, a genre of music, have gained significant popularity among music lovers in South Africa, particularly within the Indian diaspora. Osman acknowledged the universal appeal of ghazals and how artists like Udhas have modernized the genre while preserving its traditional essence. He mentioned the success of previous ghazal concerts, including the 2017 show "Legends of Ghazal" featuring Pankaj Udhas, Anup Jalota, and Talat Aziz.

Pose 1: Upward Facing Dog Pose / Urdhva Mukha Svanasana

1. Lie on your stomach with your palms on the mat at waist-level and the tops of your feet on the mat, allowing for a full leg stretch.
2. Inhale deeply and lift your torso off the floor, using your arms to support the upward movement.
3. Keep your shoulders down and avoid slouching.
4. Engage your thighs to create stability.
5. Gently push your chest forward within the comfortable range of your lower back.
6. Maintain a forward gaze with a relaxed neck.
7. Hold the pose for 20 seconds and then lower your torso back to the mat.
8. Repeat the sequence 5 times, taking a short rest between each pose.

Pose 2: Cat-Cow Pose / Bitilasana

1. Start on all fours, with your arms aligned with your shoulders and your knees aligned with your hips.
2. Begin with the Cow Pose. Inhale deeply, allowing your belly to drop towards the floor as you lift your chin and hips towards the ceiling.
3. Exhale and transition into the Cat Pose. Pull your belly in, arch your lower back, drop your hips, and bring your head and neck downwards.
4. Repeat the sequence 5-8 times, performing the movements slowly and deliberately. Return to a neutral back position between each Cat-Cow.
5. Conclude the pose with Child's Pose.

Pose 3: Cobra Pose / Bhujangasana

1. Lie on your stomach with your palms placed at shoulder-level and the tops of your feet on the mat for a complete leg stretch.
2. Draw your elbows in towards your body and straighten your arms, lifting your torso off the mat. Keep your pelvis and upper thighs in contact with the mat.
3. Use the extension of your spine to raise yourself, experiencing a gentle stretch throughout your back. Be cautious not to strain your lower back and stay within your comfort level.
4. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your neck soft.
5. Hold the pose for 10-15 seconds and then lower your torso back down.
6. Repeat the sequence 5 times, taking brief rests between each pose.
7. Finish with Downward Dog Pose.

Pose 4: Plank Pose / Phalakasana

1. Assume the plank position on the mat, with your palms spread and arms strong but not rigid. Engage your core and thighs.
2. Tuck your tailbone under and press your heels back, ensuring your body maintains a straight line without arching or drooping.
3. Relax your neck and shoulders, and direct your gaze towards the mat.
4. Hold the pose for 30 seconds, or aim for up to 60 seconds if possible.
5. Bend your elbows to lower yourself to the floor while keeping your body straight.
6. Repeat the sequence 2 times, resting briefly between each pose.
7. Conclude with Child's Pose.

Pose 5: Tree Pose / Vrikshasana

1. Stand on the mat with your feet planted firmly on the ground, hip-width apart.
2. Lengthen your spine and stand up tall.
3. Join your palms together at chest-level and exhale slowly.
4. Lift your left leg and place the sole of your left foot on the inside of your right thigh, as high as possible.
5. Use your hand to assist in positioning your foot securely.
6. Fix your gaze on a point at eye-level in front of you to maintain balance.
7. Hold the pose as steadily as you can for 5 breaths, inhaling and exhaling slowly.
8. Repeat the same steps with your right leg.

Pose 6: Wide-Leg Forward Bend / Prasarit Padottasana

1. Stand facing the long edge of your mat, with your feet placed approximately 4 feet apart, toes pointing forward.
2. Place your hands on your hips and hinge forward from your hips, maintaining a straight back.
3. Lower your palms to the floor and allow your head to hang towards the ground.
4. If needed, utilize blocks or the support of a sofa or chair to modify the stretch and feel it in the back of your legs.
5. Hold the pose for 15 seconds and then release.

Pose 7: Standing Forward Bend / Uttanasana

1. Stand with your feet planted firmly on the ground, hip-width apart.
2. Lengthen your spine and stand tall.
3. Extend your arms overhead and swing them forward and down towards your feet, bending from your hips. Aim to touch your feet or the floor.
4. If the stretch is challenging, place your hands on your knees or shins and focus on comfortably bending forward.
5. Hold the pose for 15 seconds and then release.

Pose 8: Pigeon Pose / Ek Pada Rajakapotasana

1. Begin on all fours.
2. Bring your left knee forward and place it so that your outer shin rests on the floor.
3. Your right thigh should be facing the floor, toes tucked under, with the knee and thigh lifted off the floor.
4. Ensure your hipbones remain parallel to the top of the mat.
5. Adjust the angle of your left leg according to your flexibility, aiming for a 45 or 90-degree angle to the top of the mat.
6. Maintain this position for 15-30 seconds, then switch legs.
7. Conclude the pose by transitioning into Downward Dog.

Pose 9: Warrior 1 Pose / Virabhadrasana

1. Stand facing the long edge of your mat with your legs approximately 4 feet apart.
2. Extend your arms out to the sides at shoulder level, palms facing down.
3. Turn your right foot towards the front of the mat, while keeping your left foot pointing towards the long edge of the mat.
4. Bend your right knee, ensuring that it aligns with your foot.
5. Rotate your torso from the waist to face your right hand.
6. Tuck your tailbone in, maintaining an upright and engaged torso.
7. Breathe evenly and slowly as you hold the pose for 30-60 seconds.
8. Swivel your torso back to the center and then rotate your legs to face the long side of the mat.
9. Repeat the sequence on the other side.

Pose 10: Squat Pose / Malasana

1. Stand facing the long edge of your mat with your feet positioned approximately 3 feet apart.
2. Bring your palms together at chest level.
3. Keep your feet firmly planted as you bend your knees, descending into a deep squat.
4. Lean your torso forward to gently push your knees apart with your elbows.
5. Maintain the pose for 30-60 seconds, focusing on even and slow breathing.
6. Perform this 2-minute pose after any home workout.
7. This relaxing pose is suitable for ending various workout sessions, whether they involve yoga or high-intensity exercises. It aids in muscle relaxation and calming the heart.

To conclude your 30-minute home workout for beginners:
1. Lie flat on the mat, allowing your body to fully relax with your eyes closed.
2. Direct your attention to your breathing.
3. Progressively scan your body, starting from your feet, and consciously relax each part, allowing it to sink into the floor.
4. Consider playing calming music during this time.

Note: Some of these poses may not be suitable for individuals with lower back, knee, or neck issues. If you experience problems in any of these areas, consult with your GP or physiotherapist before attempting these poses at home.

International Day of Yoga: Celebrating Unity and Well-being in Durban

In partnership with the eThekwini Municipality, the Consulate General of India, Durban, is organizing an event to celebrate the International Day of Yoga today, June 21. The event will take place at People's Park, located in Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Starting at 8:30 am and continuing until 12:30 pm, the yoga event will be followed by a cultural performance that includes an Indian classical performance and a Zulu dance by the local South African community.

This year's celebration holds special significance as it marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and South Africa.

The consulate stated that the International Day of Yoga is observed annually on June 21 with the aim of promoting yoga's benefits for health, well-being, and fostering a more peaceful and harmonious world. It serves as an occasion for people to unite and experience the transformative power of yoga.

The theme for this year's event is 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakan,' which celebrates India's contribution to humanity. The event follows a 'public partnership' or 'Jan Bhaagidari' approach, aiming to mobilize communities worldwide to come together.

Ratha Yatra, a super important Hindu festival linked to Lord Jagannath (the avatar of Lord Vishnu), takes place in the captivating city of Puri, India, during the sunny months of June or July.

This legendary event draws over a million pilgrims annually, not just from India but from all corners of the globe. Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is the one day when devotees who aren't allowed inside the temple get a golden opportunity to catch a glimpse of the deities. It's a festival that symbolizes equality and togetherness.

The trio of deities—Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and their sister Subhadra—are usually worshipped inside the temple. But during this magical celebration, they venture onto the streets of Puri, spreading their divine grace for all to witness. Their yearly pilgrimage takes them to their aunt's temple, the Gundicha Temple, located 2 km away from the sacred abode of Lord Jagannath.

The Jagannath Temple in Puri holds immense reverence and is counted among the four holiest temples in India. The other three are Rameshwaram in the south, Dwarika in the west, and Badrinath in the north.

The festival commences with a solemn invoking ceremony in the morning, and the highlight of the day arrives in the afternoon when the grand chariot procession takes place through the bustling streets of Puri. The three deities grace separate chariots, each with its distinct magnificence. Lord Jagannath's chariot, Nandighosa, stands tall at 45.6 feet with 18 wheels. Lord Balabhadra's chariot, Taladhwaja, reaches 45 feet in height with 16 wheels, while Subhadra's chariot, Devadalana, stands at 44.6 feet high with 14 wheels. These awe-inspiring wooden chariots are reconstructed each year, accompanied by intricately crafted wooden idols of the deities, which are ritually replaced every 12 years.

Ratha Yatra truly encapsulates the spirit of devotion and excitement. The entire festival buzzes with positive energy, from the morning invocation to the exhilarating chariot-pulling festivities. The recently held Sid Sriram music concert on 17 June 2023 at the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) was a highly anticipated event for fans and music enthusiasts. While the concert showcased the remarkable talent of Sid Sriram, there were several negative aspects that affected the overall experience for some attendees.

Some of the complaints from ticket holders was the inadequate seating arrangement for the more expensive ticket options. Surprisingly, the seating for these higher-priced tickets was not elevated as expected. Instead, it was observed that the cheaper ticket holders, who had paid half the price, had a better view of the stage. This inequitable seating arrangement created frustration among those who had invested in premium tickets, as they were not able to fully enjoy the concert experience.

Additionally, while Sid Sriram's performance was undoubtedly captivating, some attendees felt that the music did not have the expected Karnatic classical feel. Instead, the concert predominantly featured a more jazzy and modern musical style. This deviation from the advertised genre by local radio stations before the concert left some audience members longing for a more traditional Tamil musical experience, and it hindered their ability to fully connect with the artist's repertoire.

There was also very limited interaction between Sid Sriram and the audience during the performance. Many people in the audience felt alienated as there were not enough moments where Sid Sriram directly connected with them. The absence of personal engagement and interaction can create a sense of distance and diminish the overall concert experience for attendees who expect a more immersive and intimate connection with the artist. The lack of audience contact can be disheartening, as it can make attendees feel like passive observers rather than active participants in the concert experience. Building a rapport and involving the audience in the performance can enhance the overall enjoyment and leave a lasting impression on concert-goers.

One crucial point that the organizers need to address is the need to pay more attention to the needs of elderly attendees. Indian artists often attract a significant number of elderly people to their concerts, and it is important to ensure their comfort and satisfaction. Unfortunately, this aspect was somewhat overlooked during the event, leading to several issues that impacted the elderly attendees' experience. One of the primary concerns raised by the elderly attendees was the behavior of certain event staff members. Reports indicate that some staff members came across as rude and pushy, particularly during the meet and greet session. Instead of providing a welcoming and respectful environment, attendees felt rushed and were not allowed the opportunity to engage in conversation with the artist. This treatment was disheartening for the elderly fans who had eagerly anticipated a more meaningful interaction.

On a positive note, the sound and lighting of the concert were exceptional. The organizers ensured a top-notch audio-visual experience, enhancing the overall ambiance and allowing attendees to fully immerse themselves in Sid Sriram's mesmerizing music.

To enhance future events, the organizers should take into account the importance of equitable seating arrangements for different ticket categories. Ensuring that those who invest in higher-priced tickets receive the expected benefits, such as better views or enhanced experiences, is crucial in maintaining customer satisfaction. Furthermore, for events that advertise a specific genre, it is essential to deliver on those promises, as aligning audience expectations with the actual performance can significantly impact overall enjoyment.

By addressing these negative aspects, the organizers can work towards creating more balanced and fulfilling concert experiences that cater to the diverse preferences of their audience.
