It’s rare for a person to sit across from you as they’re dying and tell you they have no regrets.

But it does happen.

And it is beautiful.

And it’s nice to know it’s possible.✨

I came across this unintentional Haiku hidden in a chart note a while ago.

A reminder that even when we’ve lost our memories. Even when it seems like there’s nothing left. We can still be brought to tears at the thought of our mothers. ✨

“I don’t know how you do it. Isn’t this work depressing?”

No my friend, what’s depressing is trying to keep a dying person alive because people were too afraid to have hard conversations, or they just didn’t think to ask about other options.

Palliative care may not be sexy medicine, but it is good medicine. ✨

Hey fellow mortals! It’s been a while. 👋

I took some time off this summer to reconnect with family and friends after the crazy year we’ve all endured. I hope you’ve had a chance this summer to do the same.

It was so nice to recharge and spend time with the people I love. It was a great opportunity to practice some of what I preach on this page… to be present and stay connected to what matters most in the moment, knowing that nothing lasts forever.

But now it’s time to dive back in. I’m excited to get working on more episodes of Talk Dying to Me. Please stay tuned.

Let me know in the comments or DM me if you have any suggestions for upcoming episodes!

As always, don’t forget, one day… you’re gonna die. ✨

Some of the best things that have happened to me have been born from some of the worst things that have happened to me. ✨

It doesn’t mean the worst things were “worth it” but it is worth reflecting on. ✨

There is not always meaning hidden away in our tragedies, but sometimes you can find it. ✨

Curious to hear your thoughts. Does light shine through the hard parts of your story? How did you get there? ✨

It is with tremendous sadness that I share the news that Dr. Megan Roberts died earlier this week. 💔

Megan was featured on Episode 6 of Talk Dying to Me (A Force of Nature) where she reflects on preparing her kids and family for a life without her as she faced stage IV cancer.

The response to this episode was overwhelming, and speaks to Megan’s strength of character and ability to connect with people on an intimate level.

I didn’t know Megan for very long, but I felt deeply connected to her and her story. If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to check out her episode. It’s beautiful beyond words, just like the incredible legacy she leaves behind.

I’ve linked Megan’s obituary in my bio. If you feel touched by her story, consider leaving a donation to the Megan Roberts Honourary Scholarship Fund at Royal Colombian Hospital. It’s a cause dedicated to medical education and leadership - something Megan felt very passionate about.

My heartfelt sympathy to Megan’s family and the many people who love her. ❤️

My mom died nearly 20 years before my nephew Trent was born, yet he speaks about her like he’s always known her. ✨

On the most recent episode of Talk Dying to Me, I sit down with Trent to talk about death, and the conversation almost immediately turned to my mom, his grandmother. ✨

I asked Trent how he knows her and he says, with conviction, “she is my grandma.” The operative word here being IS... not was. ✨

I will always love that he said it that way. ✨

To hear Trent talk about his “Grammy Charmaine” and make fart noises into a microphone, check out the latest episode of Talk Dying to Me wherever you get podcasts. ✨

Psychologist, Carl Jung, coined the term “wounded healer.” ✨

It’s the notion that we are called to help others as a means to tend to the hard parts of our own history. ✨

There is a beautiful alchemy that happens when two wounded souls collide. ✨

A shift in our state of being. A comfort in knowing we are not alone. A reassurance that we can survive the things that feel unsurvivable. ✨

I see it every day in this community. ✨

A couple of weeks ago I sat down with Barbara Morningstar for an interview on her new video series. Barbara is an author, speaker and educator who has been working in hospice and end of life care for over 25 years. It was such a pleasure to sit down with her for an intimate conversation about grief, childhood loss, and what inspired me to pursue a career in palliative medicine.

Episode Description: Dr. Lauren Daley is a young, dynamic, palliative care physician practicing in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In this conversation we explore life, death and Millennial curiosity and creative influence on opening end of life discussions more fully and into the mainstream. We begin by discussing the painful loss of her mother to a car accident at age six, then move to her work as a palliative doctor and the creation of her web site and podcast “Talk Dying to Me”. It is a goal of Lauren’s to open this important dialogue to people of all ages and remind us of our own mortality in turn enriching our appreciation of the gift of life itself.

About

Hi there!

I’m Lauren. Keeper of death stories, purveyor of good dying, believer in good living & fellow mortal.

Talk Dying to Me is my attempt to wake you up to your own mortality.

I was inspired to pursue a career in palliative medicine following years of thinking about death after my mom died.
