Following the Nameless Mist stream yesterday, I bring you another early play of another exceptional album from Friday’s set of Fólkvangr Records releases.

Arizona-based Kalee Beals' second album is an ethereal, gossamer woven revelation of blackened folk, ambient indie, gauzy shoegaze, post-metal and other inspired influences elegantly melded into her primally emotive sophomore album that adds equal shades more light and dark to 2019’s Burial Grounds.

The range of artists that come to mind each time I play through this album has been quite remarkable – getting flashes of blackgaze like Clair Cassis, Sleeping Peonies, Alcest; then Captured Tracks/Sub Pop/ Cherry Red shoegaze/dreampop bands like Cranes, School of Seven Bells, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Blouse, and the dark-alternate rock of artists like Chelsea Wolfe, King Woman, Emma Ruth Rundle, Anna von Hausswolff – often all simultaneously during the same passages, or subsequent plays.

Clearly not going to be one for the dedicated second waves fans among you, but I also know there are many followers of this channel for who this will lands as deep as it has for me.

The album releases in full this Friday 10th, with bonus tracks included in all digital downloads. Physical editions of CD and cassette are released by Fólkvangr Records with digital from Ghostwriter

Thank you to Duncan and Transmissions From the Dark for hosting the steaming premiere of Lifeless, the third full-length album from Nameless Mist!

"I am very proud to present an advance stream of Nameless Mist’s new full length album, Lifeless, ahead of its release this Friday through Fólkvangr Records.

Trans anarchist depressive suicidal black metal from Raleigh, NC, this album is anything but what its’ title suggests, following in the footsteps of the two previous albums, leaving fiercely assertive footsteps in the gently lain snow and shimmering ice crystals; melting paths with the burning fires of self-actualisation and rebirth from flame. In fact, ‘Nameless Mist II’ may well be my favourite album of 2022, would I ever get around to organising my thoughts on it – Queen of Shadows sounds like a black metal version of Death in Vegas’ Aisha, so it must be.

Musically, the project’s progenitor, Lauren Straily delivers exceptionally sharp buzzing blackened trance, and where the self-titled and II albums kept sleek sinuously undulating profiles, with Lifeless she has aged the riffs, and whole production style, with layers of gnarled bark, toughening the exterior, propelled by synths like regal horns and full bodied drums with a denser rawness and even more imposing presence – perhaps even closer to this project’s namesake of the cosmic entity birthing God of Lovecraft lore, though the lyrical themes and concept are closer to social constructionism than cosmic destruction.

Easily one of my favourite projects of recent times, and this album only furthers that enthusiasm."

As I do towards the end of each year, I would just like to take a moment to thank everyone that has kept Folkvangr Records around for another year. To my customers old and new, thank you, without your continued support I wouldn’t still be here almost six years later. To the blogs and youtube channels that help spread the word, thank you so much. To the labels and other organizers I have worked with this past year, thank you as well.

I am very proud to present single track ‘Violently Interred’, from the new Vintertodt album, Under Endless Invented Night, which released on October 21 through Fólkvangr Records and Forest Summoner.

Streaming on the channel now - an intense, seismic irruption of snarling, claustrophobic black metal savagery from the trio of Nick Rossi (of crushing black doom band Diplegia), the prolific Joe Caswell (of the astral Olim, sci-fi industrialised Anthromechanicus, and pagan bm project Burden of Ymir), and man of the hour, Neil Schneider – masterer of BlackBraid, co-consipirator of Diplegia, and his own whorrifying entity of sepulchral noise under Calling of Phasmic Presence.

Together, as Vintertodt, this filthy ice-cold storm of a band build on the previous teaser track Creeping Death, and their Demo and Compilation albums released under Black Spark Records in 2019 to produce another level of intensity.

Prepare for the 21st! Digital is available to preorder from the band now; CDs can be ordered from Forest Summoner, and Fólkvangr will have tapes closer to release day.
