The Radiophonic Institute Born out of the profound legacy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop

Led by inspirational composer, creator and curator Matthew Herbert, a key aspect of our work is to inspire and enable a new generation of diverse creative practitioners to collaborate and challenge the pre-existing conventions of music-making and sound design. Our work is supported through partnerships with the PRS Foundation, BBC R&D, and The Daphne Oram Trust, and is funded by Arts Council Engla

nd, and a range of public and private organisations. Our initiatives include The Oram Awards, Sound of the Year Awards, The Radiophonic Travel Agency, and The Museum of Sound.

One week on, we're reflecting on our Margate At One broadcast, produced by Margate Radio in collaboration with the Radiophonic Institute.

Last Friday, we broadcast a live improvised interpretation of Margate using field recordings of various locations around the town captured at 1pm on a Friday.

Thanks to the amazing Moon Zero, Melinda Bronstein and everyone else who was involved.

We're collaborating with Margate Radio for a unique interactive broadcast on Friday 25 October at 1pm.

Field recordings from 8 locations, chosen for their sonic footprint and/or importance to Margate, were captured at the same time; 1pm on a Friday afternoon.

The curation of each recording when broadcast will be interactive and spontaneous. Each recording will have its own fader on a mixing desk at the station, with members of the public (YOU) invited to determine what’s heard.

This will be achieved by each person, or combination of people, turning channels of the mixer up or down on whichever recording they choose. They might choose to listen to the sound of the arcades, perhaps it will be the seafront, or birds singing at Dane Park, or perhaps they’ll choose everywhere all at once.

Tune in online or join us in person for this experimental roaming report of Margate. The broadcast will be followed by an improvised performance by local ambient producer Moon Zero & friends.

Tune in on Friday at 1pm for a very special one off show.

We have collected field recordings from 8 locations chosen for their sonic footprint and/or importance to Margate. All the field recordings are 30 minutes in duration and captured at the same time; 1pm on a Friday afternoon.

The results will be broadcasted on Margate Radio this Friday at 1pm

The curation of each recording when broadcasted will be interactive and spontaneous.

What we hope to achieve is to capture an unfiltered sense of diversity of places and spaces, the activity that occurs, the relationship between them and ultimately the real essence of Margate, at a specific moment. A roaming sonic report of Margate at One

We could hear fascinating synchronicity, conflicting interactions, or perhaps nothing much at all. For us, the excitement is in the unknown and in hearing Margate for what it is at a given time on a given day.

The broadcast will be followed by an improvised performance by local ambient producer .zero & friends

He will manipulate the broadcast and craft a new soundscape with his audio mangling and looping tools, creating a kind of shadow, a reflection of what we just heard, by telling his own sonic story of what was experienced.

The Radiophonic Broadcast returns with a new series and format investigating sound in all its forms. Think of it as two sides of an LP or cassette: the first contains conversations, interviews, and factual information; the second – only sound.

The first three episodes can now be found wherever you get your podcasts. They include:

1) The Sound of the Year Awards 2022 featuring Matthew Herbert in conversation with Alannah Chance, M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel of Matmos and Naomi Paxton about the role that sound plays in political events, mapping disappearing organisms, nature and society. Their discussion is followed by submissions from 2022, featuring sounds from Indonesia, Ukraine, South Africa, Canada and Taiwan ranging from cicadas and political protests to drift ice and poetry performed by Axel Kacoutié.

2) An interview with the Nuyorican artist and researcher Keesia Maria Sappho who specialises in multispecies collaborative projects that are at the intersection of human, machine and organic communication. Sappho is a pioneer of “trans-species listening” – instruments and compositions developed in collaboration with AI and fungal ecosystems. The interview is followed by a performance featuring Una MacGlone, Sappho, and her custom built instrument The Ostoyae.

3) The London-based duo Sue and Matt Harding discuss their work with Foley, sonic textures and expanded cinema. The podcast examines the intersection of sound, performance and moving image – focusing on repetition as the defining motif. After the conversation, you will hear their performance with the violinist Angharad Davies, taken from the DIN group show in 2023, curated by The Thames Submarine.

Produced by Ilia Rogatchevski for The Radiophonic Institute.
