Project Title: The Road Ahead to UPOU-BAMS program
Project Proponent: Miguel Ferdinand C. Co
Date created: April 2024
Medium/Technology used: LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP)
Project Background and Motivation:
As a first-year student of BA in Multimedia Studies of UP Open University (UPOU-BAMS), I tend to anticipate what lies ahead in order to manage my expectations and prepare myself for what is to come. The UPOU-BAMS website at https://fics.upou.edu.ph/bachelor-of-arts-in-multimedia-studies/ offers an overview of the BAMS curriculum and plan of study. The curriculum section of the website details the total academic units necessary to complete the program. Each major BAMS course is accompanied by a respective course guide. However, not all course guides include a reference list. Reading materials for BAMS students are accessible only upon enrollment in a specific course. This is the limitation that I intend to address.
In this context, I intend to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the UPOU-BAMS program by proposing a prototype online platform where fellow and prospective UPOU-BAMS students would have an alternative platform to easily navigate the different courses of UPOU-BAMS program. At the same time, interested parties would be given the opportunity to add list of reading and reference materials for each course with an option to include annotations. The interactive feature of this proposed facility would empower distance learners to contribute as content creators. Furthermore, it would offer other learners the freedom to comment on each other’s contributions, thereby enriching the overall conversation. The flowchart outlined in the BAMS Curriculum 1.20 will serve as the central dashboard for this initiative.
Main contribution as New Media Art:
To me, the flowchart of UPOU-BAMS Curriculum as shown below is a work of art (derived from the GoogleDrive of UPOU-BAMS program). It resembles like an integrated circuit (IC) or a train subway map. Its visual overview provides valuable guide on how to complete the UPOU-BAMS journey. Below is the list of value-added:
1. To maximize its usability, I have transformed the flowchart into a new media art by introducing functionality and interactivity features. The flowchart serves as the main dashboard to access the different BAMS courses with their corresponding course guides.
a. Interactivity - as you mouse hover each box of BAMS course, the color of its border becomes red.
b. Functionality - clicking on the box of each BAMS course will display the corresponding course guides.
2. To populate the list of reference materials by any interested content contributor, a content management system (CMS) shall be developed with session management (i.e., a work-in-progress).
New Media Art Theme: Promoting research collaboration through sharing list/links of reference materials facilitated by web-based database-driven online platform
The ultimate intention of this project proposal (PP) is to promote collaboration among fellow BAMS colleagues by sharing valuable references with each other. The navigability feature of my project facilitates the content viewing of each BAMS course. The simple idea of sharing reference materials to enrich learning experiences of fellow BAMS learners is something that my PP would like to promote as a research culture. After all, research is a collaborative effort. (Please note that the creation of the corresponding content management system (CMS) for sharing references is still a work-in-progress.)
With the advent of big data and explosion of information due to digital revolution, my PP would help filter the vast amount of information from the internet. It is my hope that the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) may recognize the merit of my PP and incorporate the suggested interactivity features in the BAMS plan of study at https://fics.upou.edu.ph/bachelor-of-arts-in-multimedia-studies/.
Instruction:
To exploit the interactivity and functionality features of my proposed project, kindly click on this link: https://bams.mcco.ph/ to forward you to BAMS section of my online portfolio (https://mcco.ph). To navigate the different UPOU-BAMS courses, kindly hover and click on the corresponding box of each UPOU-BAMS course to display the course guide.
