Happy new year!

And to celebrate, we released a major update on the SE:20 Core Rules! You can get them for free from our website, SunderedEpoch.org or from DriveThruRPG.

The SE:20 RPG System is a classless, skill based d20 RPG designed to emulate the action hero style of fiction. It uses the familiar d20 skill system and resources for other d20 systems can be easily adapted to the SE:20 system.

In this update, we’ve expanded the core rules to include a lot of optional rules. We added a choose-your-adventure style introduction to help teach you how the system works, expanded the character creation section, added new optional attributes, and reorganized a whole lot. On the combat section, we added an example of combat and a whole slew of optional combat rules. The equipment chapter got a bunch of new stuff including toxins, explosives, new and revised armor, and equipment design guidelines to help you make or convert your own.

But wait, there’s more!

Last year we made a couple of videos to introduce you to the system and character creation. Well, this year we added combat example video. All of which can be viewed from our website at SunderedEpoch.org and follow the links to the SE:20 system.

As if that wasn’t enough, we uploaded a bunch of unofficial documents to our Fan Service! page. This includes documents for BattleTech and the Alien RPG as well as conversions for the SE:20 system. Need monsters? We got you covered with our encounter cards. Need a campaign guide for BattleTech Alpha Strike? Check out Blood, Money, and Steel, our map-based campaign guide that dives deep into running a campaign from start to finish.

Don’t forget to check out our other works. Dungeon delvers may appreciate Into the Unknown, a deck based dungeon and wilderness map generator complete with treasure, monsters, and traps. Or for tabletop strategy enthusiasts, Immortal Wars will scratch that itch in a world of magic, machines, and madness!

As always, if you like what you’re seeing, send us an email, follow us on Facebook, and let us know what else you’d like to see.

Many thanks, and we look forward to what 2025 will bring!

The Alpha Strike Campaign Guide Version 2.27 is now out! Major changes and a new name!

Blood, Money, & Steel - A Mercenary Campaign Guide for BattleTech Alpha Strike

The biggest change is the appearance. I stripped out the artwork and replaced them with art from Shutterstock. There's a fair bit of reorganization done in Chapter 13 and 14, but most of the rules are the same.

After reviewing the contracts in the Mercenaries book, I decided I liked my contract better. It just made more sense to me. Despite some pricing changes in Mercenaries, I did some comparisons and they were "close enough" to what I had already listed so left everything in PV rather than converting to SP.

If you see anything that seems off, please let me know!

Lastly, I've published the book to DriveThruRPG as a free download with a Pay-What-You-Want option. With this option, it streamlines publication and notification and I don't have to manage the files in my personal cloud storage. I got feedback from Catalyst that my document doesn't violate their copyright, so as long as I'm not making tons of money from it, we should all be happy :D If you like what I'm working on, please drop a comment and review on DriveThru and consider checking out my other publications. I've written my own d20 RPG, SE:20, and a published a few other useful RPG related items. And if you're looking for mood music, check out my music page, Delusional3.com

Questioning the militia guard, the PCs discovered that Jessap never intended them to get to the inn. Though the guard claimed to have influence in the city, it was clear he was a low ranking soldier by his insignia, the equivalent of a sergeant. With threats of violence, the guard told the PCs everything he knew. Jessap was working with Jarl, the militia captain for the Ratbor Boroughs. He didn’t know there were people in the crates. The PCs let him go with a warning that he would owe them a favor later.

Returning to Jessap’s to get paid, the group suffered a diatribe of curses from the gangster and a final admonition that he never wanted to see them again. They had clearly ruined some sort of plan. Getting paid a single gold coin each, the group retired for the night.

In the morning, they went shopping for upgraded armor.

By midafternoon, the group went back into the outskirts of the city to resume their investigation of the dilapidated house. They approached cautiously, and though there was no sign of anyone in the area, they took care to look into each window.

While looking through the dining room window, the human smith, was struck with a horrific sensation of being strangled. The sensation was so overwhelming that he nearly feinted. Their curiosity and caution raised, they continued a careful search around the perimeter of the house, even hoisting the Phylinx onto the roof to search for openings and standing on the ogre’s shoulders to peak through the upstairs windows.

Listening at the front door, the vex eater suddenly heard a disembodied scream. He decided it was a psychic echo, so he took more time to concentrate and focus on the auras. His visions filled with horrible scenes of multiple helpless victims dragged through the door and a shadowy, animalistic face looming over them before they were brutally murdered.

Finally satisfied that the house was unoccupied, they snuck in through the lower floor window into what had once been a dining room. They crept carefully into a hallway to a store room in the back of the house, the door locked. The kanis withdrew some tools and a sharp knife and made quick work of the lock. The stench of death was strong here. Inside the room were baren shelves and a single, large cupboard, the key still sitting in the lock. As soon as the Kanis turned the key, the doors sprung open and the rotting co**se of a long-dead human fell onto the Kanis.

They quickly realized the co**se was infested with rot grubs, and they furiously cleaned off the Kanis before any of the worms could burrow into her flesh. The Kuolian Vex Eater then cast a spell to destroy the swarm of worms, leaving an unfortunate mess on all the walls.

Then they turned towards the kitchen where once again, the echoes of horror flashed in their minds. Both the Kanis locksmith and Kuolian Vex Eater saw visions of victims being dissected and butchered like livestock, the rusty stains coloring the floor. Though the Kanis maintained her composure, the Kuolian became overwhelmed by the visions.

It was then they heard something at the front door. A cruel voice echoed in the house, “I can smell you!” The sound of a vicious blade scraped against a wall and the three in the house retreated back to the dining room and the open window. “Your friends outside are asleep. They may never wake again.”

Between the malevolence of the voice and the thought of their friends having been murdered made the Phylinx’ blood freeze. Panic filled him and he wanted to run. They listened at the closed door as the monstrous killer paced searching from room-to-room, then finally going upstairs.

The Phylinx finally recovered his composure and led the group into the foyer just as he caught a glimpse of the killer’s fur covered legs. It turned, and stood in the stairway, its vicious ratface and wicked eyes peered down at them in complete madness.

The Phylinx took a defensive stance, sword dripping with venom and braced for an attack. With a yell, the ratman threw a grimy cleaver at the Phylinx then leapt off the stairs to attack from the flank as it tried to push past the Phylinx through the door. But the Phylinx fought back and cut deep with his sword and blood sprayed from the ratman’s wounds. Then the Kanis lunged in with her own sword, a deep stab into the beast’s belly. The monster collapsed onto the ground and lay still.

Making certain the thing was dead, the Vex Eater summoned a magical blade of wind and slashed. Little did he know, the ratman’s collapse was a ruse, as its eyes opened. They quickly realized its wounds had healed and the only weapon they had that could slay it was the Vex Eater’s magic.

The Phylinx leapt onto the ratman followed by the Kanis and the two of them struggled to keep the creature pinned while the Vex Eater slashed over and over into the ratman’s body until it was barely recognizable. When the thing finally stopped twitching, they were all covered in blood.

Of Gods & Men: Chapter 3

Development continues with our fantasy game world. Part of that development is running local games to bring the world to life. You can find the previous chapters in the posts below. Search for “Of Gods & Men”.

Returning to Cosk, the group are welcomed as heroes by those that know their deeds. The farmers have spread the word of their harrowing journey and how this group of strangers came to their aid and rescued their children. Unfortunately, these tales are not universally welcome. Jessap, a man with a brutal reputation, has threatened to do away with these “do-gooders” and threatened the family of the farmers and extorting their merchant kin.

Hearing of this, the party decided to pay Jessap a visit. They traveled to the Ratbor Boroughs, the slums to the south of the city of Cosk and discovered the true cost of Jessap’s handiwork. Here, dozens of people stew in poverty and misery addicted to an alchemical mixture called Fantasia, and Jessap’s warehouse is the source.

The heroes negotiated their way past the goons guarding the front of the warehouse intent on confronting Jessap. But to their surprise, none of Jessap’s crew recognized them. Soon, Jessap was offering the group a few silvers to “rough up” the do-gooders, completely oblivious that they were standing in his midst. Sizing up the group, the gangster offered the group a job. Simple but lucrative. One gold coin each (about $1000 each) to deliver crates across the city after midnight. The party agreed. Before they could speak more, the milita guard captain entered and demanded Jessap clear the room because they had business to discuss.

Having left Jessap’s district, they visited their friends near the center of town and got news that a Phylinx (catfolk) from the North was trying to gain an audience with the city’s Burgomaster and also that a young girl had gone missing from her home nearby. They visited the family of the missing child and found scratch marks and prints leading away from the city into the wilderness to the east. They tracked the prints, appearing to be giant rat prints, to a dilapidated house in an overgrown lot. But the sun was setting and they needed to return to Jessap’s warehouse.

Arriving at the warehouse they found two carts loaded with different sized crates. Jessap eyed the groups and split them up, prioritizing strength for one cart. The party was to travel north to the Four Winds district to the Stag’s Tail tavern and deliver the goods to the owner. Navigating through the streets, the party used their knowledge of the city to avoid conflict along the way, arriving unmolested at the inn. Before they could enter and announce their delivery, a militia guard stepped from the shadows across the street demanding delivery. He threatened the party but only one of the group showed any sign of backing down. Knowing that Jessap was incredibly clear about the terms of the delivery, the party refused and attacked as two more militiamen stepped from the shadows.

Alerted by the noise, patrons of the inn ran to the streets in total confusion of who to attack. Some quick discussion avoided conflict with yet another team of fighters and the group fended off the militia and ran them down, capturing the leader. Thinking the group had fled, the residents of the inn opened a crate and withdrew its secret contents. The party stood in silent shock as they saw the men withdraw a clearly drugged human man from the box.

Of Gods & Men: Chapter 2

Development continues with our fantasy game world. Part of that development is running local games to bring the world to life.

Traveling by road, the party came across a small town named Riven. It seemed abandoned except for one sickly man washing blisters near the well. He told the group that the town was cursed and suffering from plague. Not wanting to expose the children and surviving farmers to the disease, the party vowed to return after they delivered the survivors to the city of Cosk.

Arriving at Cosk late in the evening, the next morning they set off in search of help from the temples of Siverandora, goddess of mercy, and Mortarious, god of death. Both claimed they could not spare assistance and had no magical healing, but an acolyte of Mortarious joined the group, if for nothing else than to help bury the dead.

Returning the next day, the group spoke with the daughter of the Townsman who explained that Mad Jakk had entered the town a few weeks before, blamed them for the death of his family, and laid upon them a curse of Bolhas, god of disease. Soon after, the first of their animals became ill, followed soon by the townsfolk. Mad Jakk was known to lurk near the silver mines to the north, and so the group set off.

Approaching the mines, they found evidence of a struggle with human and goblin blood spilled in the dirt of the mine shaft. Entering, they were beset by a guard of kobolds, most of which fled. The party pursued down the shaft spotting a pit trap, then blocking the kobolds’ escape with a magical wall of fire. Their hand force, the kobold begged for mercy and the group offered to negotiate.

Soon they realized the cave was full of kobolds, all of whom were stricken by illness. Offering to end the plague, the party was guided through the caves to where Jakk resided. As they approached, the stench of death and rot overwhelmed them and they came to a grotto filled with the dead bodies of kobolds and human miners. Several of the dead rose and lumbered towards the party.

Setting the room aflame, the party shoved the hoard back into the flames and hacked their limbs until they moved no more. Exhausted, they stood in the rotting pit when a voice boomed and a figure stood backlit, “who dares enter my realm?”

The party prepared for battle when Jakk remarked, “you’re not the idiots from Riven! Come and join us. We’re just sitting down for dinner.”

Approaching cautiously, they noticed the door of the cave seemed to have been taken from a townhome from above and the cave they entered had been renovated to look like a home, complete with dinner table with four figures seated. Jakk offered a bowl of swirling stew to each of the seated figures, the desiccated remains of his family, then offered the newcomers to join them. He began a blessing and, having seen enough of the madness, the party attacked and Jakk was struck down by an arrow. Meanwhile the co**ses of his family rose from their places. Two dragged Jakk to safety while the other two attacked the invaders.

One by one, the zombie family was cut down, but from their chests burst insects resembling the Rascion priestess’ ascended form. Jakk, having been fed the noxious stew, rose anew, his body transformed by disease and mutation. He hacked at the party and cursed their existence. Narrowly, the party cut down Jakk and two of the flying insects, but the other two escaped.

Searching the cave, they found the source of the disease. Barrels marked with the barbed wheel of Bolhas leaked their contents into the stream that fed the wells and rivers downhill. Working with the kobolds, they successfully removed the barrels from the waters and within days the kobolds began to recover.

Of Gods & Men:

Development continues with our fantasy game world. Part of that development is running local games to bring the world to life.

Our adventure started in the city of Cosk, on the eastern border of the the Freedlends. To the west lies the goblin kingdoms of Lotus Nations.

Ambushed in the night, our intrepid party was captured by a raiding party of goblins and humans and destined for slavery. Several days' march from Cosk, the goblins were attacked by a band of gnolls more interested in slaying the goblins than the captives. The party snatched up a fallen sword, hacked the ropes that bound them, and retrieved some of their belongings before escaping into the woods.

Marching for hours until sunrise, they found themselves near a road traveled by a caravan heading to Cosk. Having mercy on them, Marcus three fingers offered them work. The following day, they spotted a goblin scout and slew it, retrieving a map they believed lead to the goblin's home.

Seeking to end the slavers, the party set off but came across a priestess performing miracles and curing the sick. A follower of Rascion, she spoke of change, transformation, and the strength needed to ascend.

Thinking the map was wrong, the party began to return to Cosk and came across a farmstead that had been raided the night before. Their children had been taken and the farmers had followed in hopes of rescue. Their path returned them to the priestess’ lair.

Feigning piety and claiming to seek enlightenment, the party was welcomed into the cave and ambushed the priestess and her party. The priestess fled, but not before shedding her human skin to reveal she had ascended, transformed by Rascion, into winged insectoid beast.

Returning to the farmstead, the party had rescued the children, but sadly, the farmhands had all been killed and cast into a chasm. Grateful, the farmers begged the heroes to es**rt them to Cosk.

Our story continues…
