This weekend will the the Festival of Combustion at the Carrie Blast Furnaces in Pennsylvania!

I WON!
My whole life (and probably yours) people will say “you win some…you lose some”
Today I won. Not ALL stones have stayed permanently in the castings, but the majority of them did.
This process of casting stones in place with iron is some thing that I’ve been researching since 2016, it is extremely exciting to have such an interesting and finicky research project going.
I’m grateful that I’ve been given the chance to do it with more frequency as of late.
Thanks so much for being interested and I’ll keep you apprised of how things are developing.

Quick coffee and breakfast before going to open my molds!
For me, opening sand molds is always like opening gifts from Santa on Christmas morning.
But I have so many questions…
Did the molds work or did they fail?
Did the CZ stones fracture from the heat or did they hold strong?
Was the metal hot enough to flow all the way around the stones and capture them?
Will the stones stay in the castings or was there a flaw in that area of the mold?
With my current artistic research there is an interesting amount of excitement and uncertainty but it keeps me engaged and on my toes! ❤️💃🏻

In the summer of 2022 I visited Sculpture Trails in Solsberry Indiana. They are an outdoor Sculpture Museum that host iron casting workshops for independent artists (among many other things). The Fire@Nite event is at the end of each summer - open to the public and a breath taking event overall!

If you're new here welcome! My name is Laura Mullen Vermilye and I am an iron casting metal artist. Being a cast iron artist is an interesting - and at times tough journey, but the rewards far exceed all challenges. While working with cast iron to create my art I am exposed to an amazing community of artists who are as dedicated and passionate as I am. The cast iron art culture is a major influence in my life and on my work and I want to share this artistic adventure with anyone who is interested in seeing hard working people make amazing art with a hot and dangerous material. To do this, I make vlog style videos on this channel that chronicle the artwork that I am currently making and my journeys in Metalsmithing and iron casting. In between casting and metal art videos you may also see some behind the scenes footage of me roaming around the heart of the Midwest and the Ozarks.
