Orange County: Marking today as the 95th anniversary of the birth of Christine Jorgensen (1926–1989), who became an international media sensation after a family friend notified the New York Daily News about her gender-confirmation surgery in Denmark in 1952.

Jorgensen assumed her unexpected celebrity with grace, using her visibility to explain and defend the experience of transgender people. For many years, she toured as a cabaret performer and gave talks on the college lecture circuit.

A native of New York state, Jorgensen moved to California in 1967 after the death of her parents. That same year, she published her autobiography. During the last two decades of her life, she lived increasingly out of the limelight in Orange County beach towns.

Jorgensen spent the majority of her time in Southern California living in a sprawling four-bedroom home in the modernist Eichler development of West Niguel in Laguna Niguel. During her final two years when she was struggling with cancer, she resided in a small apartment in San Clemente.

Both Jorgensen's home at 31752 Grand Canyon Dr. in Lagnua Niguel (upper right) and her apartment at 605 Calle Canasta, No. 1, in San Clemente (lower right) are still standing as private residences.
