Fast, Lean and Invincible Radio Programme on WYN-FM in Victoria, Australia On Saturday 13th November 1999 at 9am, “FAST, LEAN and INVINCIBLE” (FLI) began.

Initially it was purely an 80s music show, carrying on the good work of FADE TO GREY that had come before it. The name came from our co-host Jeff based on FAST (John Fastuca), LEAN (Jeff McLean) and INVINCIBLE (Dom Vinci). We all new each other from a previous community radio station that no longer exists and the chemistry that you hear now stems back to the early days and knowing each other over

such a long period of time. On Saturday 15th July 2000 two things happened. The only 80s music dropped and Jeff and Dom started adding their musical tastes to the banquet. There has been many, many segments over the years. So many in fact that they will have their own fact sheet. In August, local band Any Excuse came in the studio performing live. They were the first live act we had in the studio. Two years later one of their guitarists, Louise and John would become husband and wife. Being a three hour show provided us scope to try different segments as mentioned previously. One of these starting in April 2001, was to broadcast radio plays both locally produced and external ones. These included: Space Tics, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Captain Kremin, Red Dwarf and The Dag Squad. This eventually gave way to the classic album side. In this segment, we played an entire album side uninterrupted. The main criteria for this was it had to be an album side that you would listen to at home and never skip a song. There were many great albums but that’s a list and a discussion for another time. In another segment, “My favourite waste of time”, we would flush songs that were so bad and never play them again. We played Bros’ “When will I be famous”, that had fellow announcer Brad Ross ring in and recall a bad high school experience. As the saying goes, from little things big things grow and from that phone call in May 2001, Brad has been an irregular regular guest on FLI. Having a three hour show also enabled us to interview many guests over the years, see FLI guest list for more details. We have been very lucky and grateful to have had access to such a range of people and are always on the lookout for more opportunities to do so. This trend has continued up to today. Even when FLI became a two hour show from 10am to noon on Saturday 31st March 2012. We hope you have enjoyed this trip where we don’t need roads.

Time for a concerts check in, on this scorcher of a day.
Look forward to hearing your replies.

First concert - Australian Crawl/ Little Heroes at Festival Hall 1980.
Last concert - Kate Ceberano/ Jon Stevens at The Palais
Best concert - A triple tie. Missy Higgins at Melba Speigeltent. Approx 100 of us there (Triple J) INXS (Kick tour) and U2/ B.B.King at Rod Laver Arena.
Worst concert - Neil Young in the late 80s. Musically very good but only said hello and goodbye nothing else. I like my talkers.
Loudest concert - Melody Lords at The Metro. Didn’t help that I was right next to the huge speakers
Seen the most - John Farnham
Most surprising - Spandau Ballet, they were on a double bill with Tears for Fears.
Next concert - Luke Combs.
Wish I could see - Bruce Springsteen. The timing has never been right.

Here is an Australia Day challenge. Imagine you are a promoter and you can pick any 5 Australian artists to put on the one bill, who do you pick and in what order? The artists can be from any time, and for this gig are in their musical peak and where relevant are still alive.

My bill from opening to closing would be:

Russell Morris
Kate Ceberano
Bee Gees
John Farnham
INXS

Elvis would have turned 90 today.
“That’s so hard to believe,” I say.
So many songs to sing a long hey.
So many favourites in their own way.

Suspicious minds is up there.
Patch it up, have a listen I dare.
Flaming Star has a lot of flair.
If I can dream with the siddes and hair.

Thank you Elvis for the memories over the years.
They keep on keeping on, with the joy and tears.
What song are you favs that you love to hear?
Let’s make a list for those far and near.
❤️❤️❤️

Using the tune of Paul Kelly’s “How to make gravy” here is my tribute to this Christmas, on How to make gravy day. Thank you for your time. ❤️❤️❤️

Hello all, it's John here,
what a 2024 we’ve been through.
It's the 21st of December, what has it meant to me and you?
In the blink of an eye it’s zoomed, no longer is it July
Not long till Christmas Day, please don't let 'em cry for me.

Wonder which relos we’ll see this year. It’s getting harder and harder to say.
So many pressures from all the sides, just to get to Christmas Day.
Who's gonna make the journey now? I bet it won't feel the same
Just add smiles, chats , a little how you doing’? And some music, tears, food and maybe a cricket game.

We give my love to those no longer here. We know it feels kinda strange.
Tell those old time stories for those not in range.
And look after the traditions like the shots and gingerbread house .
I'll be thinking of them early Christmas morning
When the time has passed by.

I hear that it’s going to be a hot day, I hope it’s not too much.
Do you remember the last one? Let’s hope it’s as good as such.
And mozzies, there may even be mozzies.
Cause the outside time is great with the Xmas cozzies.

Oh praise the Baby Jesus, have a Merry Christmas,
Some are really gonna miss it, all the interaction and the mad dash.
And later in the evening, I can just imagine,
You'll put on Paul Kelly and push the tables back

At least we can do the catch up, you know I really like that.
Just don’t mention the Premiership going interstate. .

I didn't mean to say that, it's just the mind it plays up,
Multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact
You know I miss it all so badly, who’s the one to save me,
I'm gonna make the journey, I'm gonna say that is that
Tell those passed that I'm sorry, yeah We miss them badly, tell 'em all I'm sorry,
And kiss the sleepy children for me
You know one of these days, I'll be telling the stories,
I'll be telling plenty, We’ll see you out the back. ❤️❤️❤️

As Aussie music month 2024 draws to an end.
Looking back on lost Aussie musicians who became friends.
Paying homage to those long gone and those left more near.
So many to speak of that we hold so close so dear.

Bon, Chrissy, Stevie, Renee, Jim and Billy to start.
Peter, Jimmy, ONJ, Michael and Shirley forever in our hearts.
The Doc, the Youngs, the Wild One you know,
Lobby, Gurrumul, Archie, Ruby and Yunupingu’s music still grows.

Guy, Greg, Marc, Ted, Andy Jon and Gerry.
Bones, Helen, Max, Greedy, Ollie, Judith and Chris.
Frankie, Jeff, Clive, James, Daryl and Harvey
Annalise, Stuart and Ross you get the gist.

Thanks to all for the great music, Sorry if there is any I’ve missed. ❤️❤️❤️

What is your go to Aussie music t shirt and why?
Here is my take on it, for what it’s worth and here’s a collection of possible shirts.

As Australian music month comes to an end.
Here’s some musical truths I’ll tell you my friend.
I’m old school so all the music I hear cause I buy.
Not into those streaming services that so many do try.

Got a wall of vinyl that these days I sadly neglect.
Got a huge amount of CDs that tell who I am by heck.
No sum up day to tell me what I have heard this year.
Just whatever comes up in my iTunes world I hear.

These days I buy more digital sad but true in this age.
Or burn old and bought CDs, with my hard drive at this stage.
Buying merch when I see artists I’m happy to say.
Got plenty to show on this Aussie music tee shirt Day. ❤️❤️❤️

Welcome to Universal Music Day 2024.
I can’t understate the power of the sound.
It sets the mood, picks you up and so much more.
So many memories help keep you onward bound.

Sure the format has changed and yet still the same.
Some artists have gone, some are still playing on.
Either way make your playlist edgy make it tame.
Just play it loud okay, as you sing each great song.
❤️❤️❤️

Here we are, “Bound for glory”. we say.
“There’s a little bit of Cazaly in us all.”
It’s “The Final countdown” today.
There’s “No second prize”, man, ball.

Its “One day in September’,
“Believe it or not” it’s a Queensland team.
“You better you bet” remember
“Ball...yes”, the other is across the border it seems.

Today it’s “More than a game”
Hope you don’t go “home in the back of a divy van”.
It’s the “Grand Final” but it’s not the same.
It’s beyond the “Leaps and bounds”, man.

Have I included all the great footy songs?
To set the scene on this great sunny Grand Final Day.
None with a bear or a swan to sing along.
As I think that it’s been 24 years since the Dons had their day. 🖤❤️🖤

His name may not be known to you on this day.
But he played a part in some great songs.
J.D.Souther was an original Eagle before going his own way.
“You’re only lonely” is one of his that I love to sing along.

He wrote “Best of my love”, “New kid in town” and “Heartache tonight”.
He co wrote “Victim of love” and “The sad cafe” to name a few.
He shared his songs with others getting it so so right.
“The heart of the matter”, “How long” and “Her town too”.

Thanks for the music JD Souther. Let the songs play on. ❤️❤️❤️

Just heard the news, it’s beginning a bit sadder.
James Earl Jones passed away, bye bye Mufasa.
He was the voice of Darth Vader, so iconic over the years.
Aged 93, great innings, excuse me as I wipe away some tears.

RIP James Earl Jones.
