The Kolkata Rape/Murder case is heart-wrenching in ts barbarity. Other such cases are also there, such as Nirbhaya and Kamduni. Yet, it would be a mistake to take these cases and paint the entire society black.

One case in 1.4 billion population does not define the whole population. One look at some of the murders and rapes by truly sick people, say in the US, leaves you no hope for humanity at all.

Around 50,000 children are trafficked for sexual exploitation in the United States each year alone. Globally that figure is 300,000! Average age of these kids is between 12-14 years!!

Does that define the American society? Ask anyone and they shrug it off as the work of some crazies.

How it is that in India, one incident defines everyone?

What is important here is how these crimes are processed. And that is what is truly shameful about the politicians in India. Specifically . 2013 saw Kamduni and now this. Similar modus operandi from the criminals, the investigative authorities and the state leadership.

The barbarity of the criminals was backed by the savagery of the state and the judiciary! The Indian judiciary becomes strangely impotent in these cases. Remember how one of the ra**st murderers was let off because he was supposed to be a "minor" based on a certificate from his madrasa?

Indian judiciary knows these games well. YET, it allows them to be played on the Indian citizens. Some day, one hopes that the Indian citizens will ask the question from the Judiciary - "What are you REALLY giving us?" With 52 million cases pending - every fifth family in the country has a pending case that will eat up generations with no end in sight - because the judges have to go for their vacations while living in the large bungalows and enforce their collective back-scratching.

All while the common person keeps grappling with crimes and injustice!

THAT is the defining feature of Indian society. Not that in 1.4 billion, there are 1-5% truly sick criminals.

It is the institutional backing for them that should make Indians ashamed of the society that has been fashioned.

More so that the Indians collectively vote them into power despite their repeated, relentless, and non-stop savagery!

Over the years, as I have looked at the overall situation in 1975 and Indira's response, I have begun to re-evaluate the imposition of Emergency. There were many complexities, agendas and conspiracies being played. How it was being played out needs better scholarship than has been available. Am hoping this movie by Kangana Ranaut will further the discussion. The trailer is amazing.

Arfa Khanum calls it a "Democratic Takeover." And no one even asks her - How the heck can a "takeover" ever be democratic?! Democracy is no longer about the "process". It is about the "result". If they don't like the person ELECTED, then s/he is a dictator. If they like, then s/he is god's gift to democracy! That is how sick this whole "left-liberal" cabal is now.

But this is where Bangladesh is headed. Every bit of that image is symbolic.

Watching ASPIRANTS (a series on IAS/UPSC exam aspirants) these days. Remember how very early I saw someone spend 3 years appearing for UPSC and not succeed. It became an obsession with that person. Almost an addiction. Oh, it scared me to even think about the UPSC process.

Then one day my school friend took me along to a bookstore to buy UPSC prep material in Karol Bagh. As I stood there, I asked for the last 10 years' papers for General Studies and Accounting - the subject I had my undergrad in. I glanced through it and remarked to my friend "if these indeed are the 10 years REAL papers, then I can pass this exam without studying". He wasn't amused.

Then he visited me at my office one day and brought out the UPSC exam form. He wanted me to sign it and give the fees as he had filled it out for me. He went and filed for both of us. I was never interested.

Totally forgot about that form. A few months later, I took off to take my ICWA exam and he called me. "Desh are you ready? Day after is our Prelims." I was like I am studying for my ICWA, I don't even know what comes in IAS Prelims. He said some history and current affairs. So I asked him to come the next day and give me a brief. He never came because he was busy himself.

I went and took the test. Finished the test in 1.5 hours for GS and kept sitting for another 30 mins just to make it respectable or people would laugh at me.

Results came and I had qualified for the Mains. 😀

For Mains, I had just a month of time off from my work. In that one month, I studied Sociology, Accounting, and GS entire material. I took the Mains but missed by ~40 points.

Heaved a sigh of relief and went on with my corporate career.

Whatever I learned about history was because of that. One evening I sat with that fat guide and got up the next afternoon after I had finished the whole thing. My interest in current affairs was kindled because of that Mains study. Whatever I write on my blog/newsletter has its basis in how I saw geopolitics and history during that one month!

Sometimes I do think, what if I had taken that exam seriously? 😉
