There are many good books by military veterans—what they did in the armed forces, what it felt like, how the institution worked—but that granularity of experience was missing from many of the books I read by former diplomats. Back in 2013, I designed this bookmark for Mystery and Imagination Bookshop (Glendale, CA), and Bob Deis picked up the tab for printing them. We both did it to support a truly great independent bookshop that had become home base for us in California. That Halloween, I gave out bookmarks along with candy to our trick-or-treaters, and was pleasantly surprised at how happy most kids were to get them. One kid, after collecting his treats, bolted away to catch up with his group, calling excitedly to his friends, "They got booooookmarks!"

Bob and Wyatt are very happy to return to Pittsburgh for PulpFest 2024, and we're bringing the heat! Well, the spice. Artist Samson Pollen enjoyed telling how a casual snapshot of him taken in the art department at Magazine Management Co. ended up in a 1973 issue of ACTION FOR MEN, with gentle Sam unwittingly cast as two-fisted he-man "Thad Blaine" in a lone-hero-takes-on-biker-gang story! He was one hell of an illustrator, and an all-around great guy. Wish you were here to celebrate your birthday, Sam, but we'll proudly celebrate you in your absence. Thank you for entrusting us with your legacy.
