Jazz kissa—cafés, largely found in Japan, that specialise in the playing and appreciation of recorded jazz, with one pictured here—are the inspiration for our Selector Series. We gather at , 15 or 20 of us, have some drinks, then the proceedings begin: an introduction of the chosen album by our Selector, perhaps providing background or maybe the story behind their emotional connection to the record, then a collective quieting of the assembled as we start listening. While I know that sounds almost ridiculous when you can stream anything you want in the privacy of your earbuds any time you want for free, the shared experience, the process of giving yourself over to the work in question, and the discussion that ensues, all make for the type of experience that is incredibly uncommon these days.

If you’ve heard the episode of our show featuring our Selector for #8 in the series as our guest, you know that there are few who think and speak about music so deeply and thoughtfully as . Our night with Will is Sat., Oct. 7th. With it being such a special event, it will take place in one of the most gorgeous spots in Baltimore, , and we’ll listen to an album Will chose closely, deeply, and just as importantly, together.

Tix and deets in bio.
