Ford is the first Black woman to lead the human services organization in its 40-year history. She's also a 2020 Urban One “Women Leading the Change” Honoree.

We spoke to her about the intersection of direct service and structural change and the need to follow the community's lead.

Our Shero of the Week is Desi P. Shelton, founder and artistic director of the Camden Repertory Theater. Shelton’s plays include I Killed My Baby’s Daddy, For Sale!, Stilettos, Stacks, Sisterhood, P@$$y 4 $ale!, and more. She received her MFA in theater from Sarah Lawrence College and her BA from Northeastern University.

We spoke to her about her passion for telling and documenting her hometown’s unique and important stories and adding urban female voices to the theatrical canon.

Our Shero of the week is Dorothy Brown, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law at Emory University School of Law and an advocate for economic and social justice. Her new book, The Whiteness of Wealth: How the Tax System Impoverishes Black Americans – and How We Can Fix It, is taking the U.S. by storm.

I spoke to her about her amazing work to illustrate that there is no such thing as “color-blind ” policy and how our racist tax code can and should be fixed to help Black Americans build wealth.

Dunnigan was born on April 27, 1906, and started her journalism career at 13!
