Final episode of Season 2 of Matcha, Masala, & Murder

It was a challenging season for a number of reasons. My first full season after losing Tristan Revan and Rain, I moved back to the U.S. from Mexico with Krayt and Kreia, and we set a weird challenge for our topics linking them to specialty days such as “mermaid day” “St.David’s Day” or even “Talk like Shakespeare Day.” It was a lot but we’re proud of our work and looking forward to our month off before kicking back up with our 3rd season.

Welcome to the exciting finale of Season 2 of Matcha, Masala, and Murder. In this episode, we explore the perplexing case of the Herbert Fuller Ship Murders,...

I haven’t posted the GoFundMe in awhile cause life has been too hectic with the trip back to U.S. with our two younger cats Krayt & Kreia followed by the immediate death of Revan, my soul-cat. And now I’m sick for the 3rd time since Tristan died.

Even with the support of friends and my neighbors this is a lot to deal with solo. Even though I’ve always been a solo-resourceful type person, I’ll admit there is no way to be prepared to maneuver everything I’ve had to with the loss of Tristan and Revan whilst living abroad with very few friends nearby.

Things are starting to get tight again, the cost of traveling and moving internationally is taking its toll and I can’t start looking for work until I get settled state side. So I’m having to ask for help again through the GoFundMe, as uncomfortable as it is to do so. With all the extra medical expenses for myself and Revan, unexpected house repairs in Mexico, and travel to the U.S. we’ve increased the original goal from $8000 to $11,000. The first $7000, I have received has been incredibly helpful and got me through these last 3 months, I am so grateful. I hate to have to ask for more support but that’s where I’m at.

My friend and cousin of Militantly Mixed, Adella’s mother, Matilda passed away on February 16th after a long battle with cancer. Mattie was a woman of service, and through out her time in-treatment she took as much care as her fellow patients as she was being taken care of by bringing meals and offering comfort. In her honor, and at Matilda’s request, they have established Mattie’s Meals, to continue the work that she began during her treatment. If you would like to help support veterans in cancer treatment at the Bronx Veterans Medical Research Foundation (BVMRF) oncology department in honor of Matilda, please consider donating and sharing this Go Fund Me.

Friends

If you wouldn’t mind helping boost the Matcha, Masala, & Murder profile a bit by casting a free public vote for listeners choice for the True Crime UK podcast awards. It just a few steps, name, email, and the name of the pod plus a short reason why you’re voting for it.

Our show is different from other historical true crime pods because we discuss cultural context of racism, sexisms, and other social issues related to the crime and punishments for the killers. Not to mention our own cultural spice as two mixed people of Black, Japanese, Welsh, English, and Indian heritages.

This is episode 8 of Matcha, Masala, & Murder, it is also MY first episode telling a tale since Tristan died. So, we did address him dying on the previous episode and in this case I had to focus on telling my crime tale without drifting in and out of my grief too obviously, I think I did a fair job. I will say that seeing myself, I am changed, I have these little burst of seeing my "old" self but I am already not the same person now that he is gone. I don't deep into emotion too often, it is a lot easier to hold it at bay when I have a co-host there, so if you would like to watch on Youtube or even just listen on Spotify, the episode is available now and I am adjusting to getting back to work whilst dealing with grief and packing.

This episode is about Sada Abe, known as "the Killer Geisha," though I disagree with the title, which I talk about in this episode. She was a woman that fell in love with a married man, had weeks of passion and kink, and then realize she didn't want him having passion with anyone else. Most would describe as a crime of jealousy, she would describe as a crime of love. I leave it to you to decide.

In this gripping episode of "Matcha, Masala, and Murder," hosts Sharmane Fury and Rhia Maîr Kaur discuss the chilling tale of Sada Abe, a woman whose intense...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g976GHXXps

This is the last episode of Matcha, Masala, and Murder of the year. And it is the last episode I recorded before Tristan died, which is why I am normal in this video. This show was such a happiness in my life when I started it, and I hope for it to continue to be a happiness for me. This is the one show of all of my shows that Tristan was consistently watching even though he is not a true crime fan. And even when learning and watching videos about Palestinians being murdered by Israel and the U.S. was getting him down, he still watched every episode up until he died. He loved the chemistry that Rhia and I have, and he was happy I found this thing that made me happy all day long. He told me he thought if I kept up the energy I have had since the summer when Rhia and I started this, that this is probably the one that I'd be able to make a living doing. I am proud of this show and of Rhia and I for getting it together, so I want to keep promoting it and sharing it for those reasons but also because its the last thing Tristan knew I was doing and he was telling me to put everything into it. One thing I know, is he was proud of my podcasting work.

I'll be honest, I have been wanting to get back to work because it is hard to sit here in Mexico all day, mostly alone, without something to do. Even though it is hard to do things, I need to do things so that I don't waste away myself. I have these four cat babies to keep healthy so I need to stay healthy. But at the same time, I feel strange when I start to work because my husband is dead and I unfortunately have to go on about life as if it makes sense.

So, I don't yet know how it is going to be when we start recording again after the New Year. I don't know if I will be able to have the same energy and chemistry with any human including ones I already have had. I don't know if I will be a success like I was pushing for. But I do know Tristan was proud of this show and of me, and I want to be motivated by that because for now that is sort of the only motivation I can think of. I know I need to build a life for the future even though I cannot imagine a future at the moment. I have experienced grief before but never anything like I am feeling now. I can't see a time when it isn't always this heavy yet. But I know I have to go through the motions for awhile until it starts to become nature again.

I share all this to share this episode because (1) I do think it might be strange to see a happy, cheery Sharmane right now knowing that my Tristan is dead. But this was recorded in late October or early November. Most of the work of these first 6 episodes was completed weeks before Tristan died. (2) I want to show what I am proud of because at the end of the day I still have to work even though my life feels frozen and this is the work I do. So, if you are interested in true crime at all, in this case specifically historical true crime with a cultural context twist by a couple of Mixed mates, please check out Matcha, Masala, & Murder or share it with your true crime friends. Thank you.

From my friend Shae, who is looking after me right now.

Hello, friends, family, and kind-hearted individuals,

My name is Shae, I am Sharmane's friend since college. It is with a heavy heart that I write to share the devastating news of the unexpected passing of Tristan Shawn Johnson. Tristan, born on January 2, 1978, touched the lives of many with his warmth, kindness, and unforgettable humor. Unfortunately, on November 30th, 2023, Tristan left this world far too soon while in Mexico, leaving behind his beloved wife, Sharmane, and their four Star Wars Sith Lord cats, Revan, Rain, Krayt, & Kreia, who all now face the daunting task of returning to the United States without him.

The Purpose:

We are reaching out to you today to request your support for Sharmane during this incredibly challenging time. The funds raised will be dedicated to covering the emergency medical services costs, cremation expenses, and the essential travel and moving costs for Sharmane and the cats to return to the United States.

Emergency Services and Cremation Costs:

Tristan's passing in a foreign country has presented unexpected challenges for Sharmane. The funds raised will help alleviate the financial burden of the emergency services and cremation costs required to ensure Tristan receives the respectful and dignified farewell he deserves.

Travel and Moving Expenses:

In addition to the immediate expenses, we aim to assist Sharmane in covering the costs associated with her travel back to the United States and the subsequent moving expenses. Navigating such circumstances is undoubtedly overwhelming, and we want to ensure that Sharmane can focus on healing and cherishing the memories of her Tristan. Rest assured Sharmane and the cats will be cared for. At present, my husband Jeff, is with Sharmane in Mexico assisting with the "business" aspects of Tristan's death and preparing for Sharmane's return. She will be with us when she initially returns to the U.S. until she feels ready to start her next chapter. The funds raised will go directly to Sharmane and will assist her until such time as Tristan's final affairs have been completed.

How You Can Help:

Your support means the world to Sharmane during this difficult time. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a significant impact in helping her cope with the financial challenges that have arisen unexpectedly.

If you are unable to contribute financially, please consider sharing this GoFundMe page within your network. Your words of encouragement and solidarity will provide comfort to Sharmane as she faces the difficult days ahead.

Virtual Memorial Service:

Sharmane invites you to join a virtual memorial service to celebrate Tristan's too short life:

Date: January 2, 2024 (Tristan's 46th birthday)
Time: 4 PM PST/6 PM CST/ 7 PM EST in US / 12 AM GMT in UK / 8 AM in W. Australia/ 9 AM in Japan
Location: Zoom [Please RSVP to receive the meeting details]

As both Tristan and Sharmane identified as Atheists, this is a non-religious, humanist gathering on Zoom will provide a platform for friends and loved ones to share their favorite stories and memories of Tristan without mentioning religious beliefs. If religion is a part of your life, we ask you keep that to yourself during this service and if that is not possible to maintain, we ask you not to attend. This is a boundary for both Tristan and Sharmane. Your presence and contributions will allow Sharmane to gain insight into the impact Tristan had on those who knew and loved him.

To RSVP and receive the Zoom link, please fill out this Google Form. {https://forms.gle/dpdSzvy9tqePmzb86}

Conclusion:

Tristan Shawn Johnson's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Let us come together to honor his life and extend our support to Sharmane during this time of grief. Your generosity will make a lasting difference in helping Sharmane navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

On behalf of Sharmane and the Fury-Johnson family, we thank you for your compassion, support, and love during this heartbreaking time.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Shae Morris

I’ve just recently lost my husband, Tristan, but a few weeks before, I also launched a new show that he was proud of me and excited for me for. So I need to be promoting it cause it is new and I ultimately want it to be successful down the line. So while it is tough to think of work right now, I need to think of work.

My new show Matcha, Masala, & Murder just released its 5th episode where I cover the story of Lavinia Fisher, a possibly Mixed Race woman that has been deemed America’s First Female Serial Killer despite no evidence of killing a single person and her only “crime” was living in land the Charleston govt wanted for a Navy base. Please check it out and share.

I know that most people that have regular jobs have to return to those jobs pretty quickly after a partner dies. Me being a stay-at-home podcaster, I’m not sure when it make sense to return to work. But as for my latest show Matcha, Masala, & Murder was all recorded and mostly edited prior to Tristan dying, I should be telling people about our work cause this is my job and I will need to return to it soon.

Our latest episode does run long but that’s because it’s an awesome story of a possibly Mixed Race woman who’s legacy is America’s first serial killer despite the fact that it is unlikely she killed anyone at all. It’s one I’m proud to have told on the show and when I can get back to work I believe this show will grow because Rhia and I have something special here.

I don’t know how to write the words I need to write here. Last night, my Tristan died, and my love went with him. It was not easy or painless, it was horrific and I couldn’t save him.

I am asking for privacy and peace right now and that if I did not reach out to you directly or asked to have someone contact you on my behalf to please give me time to process as I am overwhelmed right now.

Konnichiwassup Cousins,

In the episode, your Sir Auntie Sharmane Fury goes into deeper explanation of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement AND the social media BIG 3 targeted Boycotts. She will cover the importance of targetted boycott over broad boycotts.

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) is a Palestinian-led movement for freedom, justice and equality. BDS upholds the simple principle that Palestinians are entitled to the same rights as the rest of humanity.
