Name any trail in Western North Carolina and chances are Pete Kennedy has hiked, biked, or run it at least once. Putting boots (or, in some cases, tires) on the ground is a key part of his job as the founder of Pisgah Map Company, an Asheville-based business that makes paper maps of regional recreation areas.

“We call it ground-truthing,” Kennedy says. “You can download tons of data from counties, states, and the U.S. Forest Service and throw it on a map, but you have to get out there and see how accurate all that data is.”

Talk about the cherry on top. 🍒

Craig Weis of Architectural Woodcraft, Inc. created the seamless cherrywood cabinetry in this structural upgrade to an early-2000s home. The white-glass-look countertops are made of the tech material Dekton. The porcelain stoneware tile on the backsplash is by Italgraniti, installed by DSH Construction.

Much of the work of Bakersville artist Lori Brook Johnson is about the adverse multigenerational impact of exploitive labor practices — a subject she knows all too well.

“I am a West Virginia coal-miner’s daughter,” says Johnson, “and that almost sounds clichéd, but it’s true, and I’m proud of coal miners. But labor that exploits you changes who you are and how you relate to your family."

Many people startle at the sight of a spider; most quake at the mere mention of a camel cricket. But Elizabeth Belz, the blacksmithing and metals coordinator at John C. Campbell Folk School, isn’t one of these people.

Working out of Brasstown, Belz manipulates metal into swarms of mosquitoes and colonies of ants. She also makes honey bees, stag beetles, grasshoppers, and stick bugs. Even chiggers — those tiny, blood-red parasites that burrow under the skin and make you itch like crazy — find a place in her studio.

Theresa Soffronoff says she is a kitchen person. “I spend most of my time at home in the kitchen. I love to cook — John and I eat our meals at the island,” she says. “When we first saw the house, the original kitchen threw me.” Walled off from the main living area, with a small island, it wasn’t built for immersive experiences. “I could never have spent time in it.”

Thanks to a rockslide early on in the composition, a smoothly planned build near Town Mountain Road turned into a tricky architectural étude. But once the firm Altura Architects, working with Glennwood Custom Builders, improvised a few technical solutions, the finale was a sleek modern home that “exposes the fabulous views and maximizes natural light,” says owner Joe Hanig, whose wife and younger son are accomplished pianists.
