Since starting my basement studio in 2019, Ive had the pleasure of working with some amazing Thunder Bay artists and Im super grateful for everyone that has come through to record with me and trust me with their art, or has lended their talent to projects I have been working on.

Some pretty deadly tunes have come out of the little One Island Productions studio (small but mighty!!) And there are more on the way.

I just wanted to send out a thanks. I was thinking - why not highlight some of the Amazing artists that have come in to lay down the magic at 1IP, and a few of my tracks that Ive had some amazing artists and friends feature on:

Jake and the Town - Reachers part 1.

Jake's songwriting is amazing, full stop. And the vibe is unique, theatrical, and progressive. Here are a few tracks from the first part of The Town's Reachers album, featuring vocalists Nancy Freeborn and Danielle Polari on one track. (Reachers Two coming soon!):

Milton Shushack - Growl EP

Kyle came in to record this 6 song record and laid everything down in no more than a few takes. with most of it live off the floor. Kyle's musicianship and songwriting ability are evident in these tracks:

Rain Delay - Live off The Floor(Jamie Smith and Kyle Shushack)

Jamie and Kyle's rootsy duo came in, we threw up some nice mics, went through some nice gear and did everything live off the floor. Jamie can come into the studio whenever he wants. One of my favourite voices in Thunder Bay. Kyle's guitar playing is top notch as usual.

Gaelin Brown - Right Where you Are (Single)

Gaelin is one of my best buds and has always been one of my favourite local songwriters ever since the days of Kangoskatbot. We both like reggae, so we co-wrote and produced this track that originated from an old tune of his. Big UB40 vibes, modernized. Backup vocals from the always amazing Maria Tassone. Mixed/mastered here at 1IP.

1sland - (Singles)

These are my original songs Ive written, produced and mixed here at 1IP that have featured performances and songwriting contributions my long time bandmates and best friends Richard Tribe and Clay Breiland, Scratching and samples by DJ Wurlwind - Wurlwind Productions as well as Drumming one of Thunder Bay's best drummers Bernie. Backup vocals in one track from Maria. Reggae/Rock/90's alternative influenced tunes.

Recording bands, and helping them achieve a sound that is the ideal representation of their art is very rewarding. To me, that’s what the studio is all about. Having such a diverse group of musicians come together to capture a moment in time. This was a good day! Stay tuned for the release or part one of Jake and the Town’s debut.

For me, with winter comes time for making music. If you are in Thunder Bay and are interested in recording at my studio, hit me up! I’m now booking for winter sessions. We’re capable of doing full bands or smaller arrangements/singer songwriter types here. Also, if you just need something mixed, I’m your man. Online mixing is also available.

Mastering Chain for today is Q3 - bus comp - 5500 EQ - silverbullet - colour Duo with hitmaker 4000’s engaged - ozone 9 maximizer, and this jingle by is sounding noice. The API 5500 is so great for mastering, the .25 dB steps make a world of difference. I always hear about the mids and lows on the 5500, but the high end is so “modern” sounding, I love it. Underrated I think! It’s like just enough “grainy bite” but still smooth. Combined with the other tools, I haven’t been happier mastering.

Jamie and Kyle were in the Studio about a month back and we had a fun day recording a few live off the floor takes of some songs of theirs. Love all of these tunes, catchy, great lyrics, great performances. Check em out!

DIY kits satisfy my tech nerd tendencies. I learn a little more every build. But the best part is you get really amazing gear for a fraction of the cost. I put this t-12 up against my AKG c414 and Mojave ma300 and it is easy in the same league. Different sound, (similar to the 414 in voicing but very much different) but everything you want in an expensive mic - warm, “3d”, pleasing highs without too much sibilance, and mojo. I can’t wait to build some more mics. You can easily make a record with them.

Recorded some guitar and bass for a new 1sland track today! Was my first time using the t-12 I just built, and it sounded great on guitar cab. The t 12 is no joke, and it sounds like a $1500+ mic easily. I have a feeling this mic will be an excellent studio workhorse. Also threw this lct-441 up - it has a very distinct mid forward voicing to it, and I’ve been blending it to push things forward in a mix in a nice way.

This is how I’m making the on-stage foot sounds for the upcoming virtual production of Alice @ Wonderland from St. Ignatius High School. Light pounds on the desk, low pass filter, reverb and a few other tricks and it works like a charm!

There’s nary been an acoustic guitar that hasn’t loved a little tickle from either the royal blue and/or the Hitmaker 4000 colour modules. Treble boost jumpers engaged. Brings out the articulation/picking beautifully and just opens everything up. All housed in the amazing colour duo - one of my favourite pieces of gear. It sounds amazing, and it’s just so cool - you can swap modules on the fly by popping the drawer out to make custom analog signal chains. And I built it myself which makes it all the more special!

Louie approves of the new bass amp for the studio, but also for gigging. Got it used in brand new condition for a great deal. I’ve been lugging around a peavy tnt 115 for like like 20 years and it’s a heavy, awkward beast. This thing is just as loud but weighs nothing. Let’s book some gigs .

Just finished the foley/final edits/mix for virtual production of Madagascar! It is sounding fantastic, and I’m pumped for everyone to hear it! has it looking amazing, and the kids did an amazing job singing and acting. Look out for the premiere!
