Laudate Deum: What has happened and what needs to be done
In 2015, Pope Francis published the “Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home”, regarded as a landmark encyclical that contemplated on the state of the present mired by ecological issues and their impacts on nature and society. This has influenced several key developments in the policies and strategies on tackling said issues within the global Catholic community, from establishing the Laudato Si’ Action Platform to establishing guidelines for faith-consistent investing. Yet more can still be done, and more must be done. In recognition of the growing urgency and necessity to address the ecological crisis, Pope Francis will release a follow-up to the Laudato Si’ on 4 October, to coincide with the conclusion of the 2023 Season of Creation; it is an Apostolic Exhortation named “Laudate Deum” (“Praise God” in Latin), a “a look at what has happened and say what needs to be done”. This webinar aims to achieve the following objectives: Present the key messages of the Laudate Deum in the global and Philippine context; Examine the relevance of the Laudate Deum in Catholic leadership to address the ecological crisis, especially the climate emergency; and Explore potential ways forward for scaling up faith-led climate solutions and other ecological actions in the global and Philippine context.
Can energy transition minerals be sustainable in the Philippines?
The issue of energy transition minerals (ETM) is an emerging critical issue across the numerous workstreams of the Philippine development agenda. The demand for these minerals is increasing with the urgency of developing solar panels, electric vehicles, and other technologies aligned with climate change mitigation. The Philippines has specifically been identified as the next hotspot for mining in Southeast Asia, as it hosts large reserves of ETMs needed for such solutions.
However, ETMs are also associated with complex economic, environmental, and social challenges that would impact national and local development. While the current Philippine administration openly supports what it regards as sustainable mining, numerous cases of environmental pollution and destruction, and human rights violations have been reported from affected communities in recent years.
Questions have also emerged on whether local stakeholders equitably benefit from ETM-related operations and how much it would truly benefit the national economy, given the miniscule contribution of the mining sector to the Philippine economy.
With the emergence of ETM as a critical issue comes the need for a comprehensive and holistic understanding of its entire value chain. It also necessitates a new framework for ensuring that from extraction to waste management, the use of these minerals would contribute to spearheading just energy transition, climate action, ecological protection, upholding social justice, and the attainment of other elements that define sustainable development in the Philippines.
CARITAS NEWS ON THE GO SPECIAL_September 29, 2023
Every 18th of September, the World Bamboo Day is celebrated to raise awareness and promote the use of bamboo, its role in people’s livelihoods, and its contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and in lowering the impacts of climate change.
To support this global event, and in recognition of the many efforts in the Philippines to maximize the use of bamboo, Caritas Philippines and the Social Action Network, through the Caritas Bamboo Forest Project supported by USAID through the INSPIRE Project of the Gerry Roxas Foundation, will conduct an online celebration of the Bamboo Day with the theme “Bamboo Forests: Our Green Future Shaped Today” on September 29-30, 2023.
