Five people, including two doctors and Matthew Perry’s personal assistant, have been charged in the actor’s tragic death, the New York Times reports.
Prosecutors said that Perry’s assistant and an acquaintance procured thousands of dollars worth of ketamine for the beloved actor by working with two doctors and a drug dealer, per the Times.
Perry, 54, died of an accidental overdose last October. The Friends star was found unresponsive in his whirlpool bath at his Los Angeles home. A toxicology report revealed that Perry had died of “the acute effects of ketamine.” The report also listed drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine, a medication approved by the FDA to treat opioid use disorder. https://katiecouricmedia.visitlink.me/6Scdhg

Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy has undoubtedly shaken up the 2024 race. If elected, she would become the first female president, and Democratic strategists say this isn’t lost on women.
“Becoming the highest-ranking woman in history as the vice president of the United States was a historic moment in its own right,” Jonae Wartel, a partner at political consulting firm Arc Initiatives, says. “Now the opportunity for her to make even greater history as potentially the first woman president, the first Black woman president, and the first South Asian American president is pretty incredible. And the energy we’ve seen from across the country around her candidacy has just really powered the campaign.”

Scientists consider the underwater rumble of shipping traffic in the Pacific Northwest to be a form of habitat destruction for marine life. The noise is deafening to creatures that depend on delicate hearing to navigate, hunt, socialize, and communicate with each other.
Humans don’t notice it, but the whales hear it loud and clear.

How can women organize status in the office? Organizational psychologist explains how women can fight gender bias at work.
“In psychology, there’s something called an interpersonal circumplex of person perception. When we look at someone, the judgements we make aren’t random. They’re organized along two dimensions.
One measure is assertiveness — how competent they are, how decisive, how persistent, how organized. The other dimension is warmth — how they rate in qualities like friendliness, likeability, sincerity. These are two very important aspects of respect, and if you rank high in both, you end up in what I call the likeable badass quadrant. If you’re in this territory, you’re going to accrue status, because if people think you’re really good at what you do and you care about other people, they’re going to respect you.”
To illustrate this, KCM took the characters from Parks and Rec and charted them along these two axes. See the upper right hand quadrant, where you can find Leslie Knope? That’s likeable badass territory, Dr. Fragale says.

When you think of wearing a weighted vest, the first thing that comes to mind may be a military-grade workout mechanism or an exercise in training for a rigorous backpacking trip. But what if we told you it can actually be used as a rather low-impact tool to improve your muscle mass and bone density?
Katie’s pilates trainer, Ashley Patten, breaks it down.
Imagine if someone built a highway right above your home and then blindfolded you. Humans may not notice it, but the underwater rumble of shipping traffic in the Pacific Northwest is considered by scientists to be a form of habitat destruction for marine life, particularly for the Southern Resident Killer Whales, local celebrities of the Salish Sea.
The SRKWs are at risk because of a dangerous cocktail of threats, which — when combined with a small population of older animals — could mean disaster. If we fail to address issues like noise pollution, they could be the first species to go extinct despite such a deep level of understanding by scientists.
One of SeaLegacy’s partners, Oceans Initiative, has employed a team of scientists to tackle this issue. Through solid research, they are finding viable solutions to inform policy and management.

❗️DEBBY UPDATE❗️ Debby made landfall as a category 1 hurricane in Florida on Monday, and has now weakened to a tropical storm as it slowly moves through southeastern Georgia. At least 5 people have died due to accidents caused by the storm in Florida and Georgia. Debby is expected to soon enter the Atlantic Ocean and restrengthen and potentially bring historic levels of rainfall and catastrophic flooding to the Southeast. Parts of Charleston, South Carolina have seen near a foot of rain and more than 8 inches has fallen in Savannah, Georgia. A tornado watch is in effect until 5 pm EST today from the middle South Carolina coast to southeast North Carolina. The footage above was filmed on Sunday, August 4 in St. Petersburg, Florida, where record setting rain from Debby caused flash flooding and led hundreds of people to evacuate their homes. 📹: Dan Ciarletta via Storyful.
Social Psychologist and NYU Professor Jonathan Haidt's new book The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness lays it out emphatically: kids are being very negatively affected by ubiquitous phone use. The research on what phones and their attendant apps are doing to our kids is devastating, and these spikes in depression, anxiety, and even self-harm correlate pretty exactly with the rise of internet-connected smartphone use. The good news is that the answer to possibly reversing this trend is simple, if not easy. In this urgent conversation with Katie Couric, Haidt lays out how we got to this point of addiction with our phones, and what parents need to know to help protect and prepare their kids as they navigate this complex technological era. Kevin Bacon kicked off his Sunday shoes this weekend when he visited Payson High School, the Utah school where he shot his movie “Footloose” four decades ago, after students there campaigned to get him to come. Payson High School students had launched a social media campaign using the hashtag #bacontopayson, which called on the actor to visit to commemorate the 1984 movie’s 40th anniversary and to mark their last prom before the school is relocated. The students also held benefits to support Bacon’s charity, SixDegrees.org According to SixDegrees.org, Payson High School students helped build 5,000 essential care kits containing hygiene items, socks, journals, reusable water bottles, shelf-stable goods and vouchers for free counseling, which will be distributed to “young people and families in need of resources throughout Utah, Colorado and Nevada.” 🎥: SixDegrees.org via storyful #kevinbacon #sixdegrees #footloose #movie #paysonhighschool
