Voici un album qui ne laissera pas de faire penser à un autre mage de l’ambient et qui en plus est inventeur du terme, j’ai nommé Brian Eno. D’entrée, avec «Innerland», nous sommes dans les mouvances soyeuses de «Music for Airport», «Music for Films» ou encore «Apollo». Mais le drapé ambient d’Erik est en cela différent qu’il ajoute par moments de très légers rythmes électroniques au reverb et à l’écho de ses guitares dont les notes akashiques nous enveloppent dans un quiet cocon propice à l’évasion astrale et au rêve éveillé (je sais, c’est paradoxal). C’est particulièrement le cas des trips «Innerland» et «Equator» dont les notes coulées en écho génèrent des frissons épidermiques tout en invitant un rythme de batterie qui s’impose progressivement. «Beyond the Sea» est un retour au calme accompagné de longues notes angéliques où glissent quelques arpèges synthétiques. «Then Now» ajoute des sons cristallins et nous promène dans un palais des glaces aux reflets irisés. Les notes de la guitare se prolongent dans ces miroirs harmoniques d’infinitude que complète un mouvement séquentiel discret. La magie opère tout au long de ces trop courtes quarante-deux minutes qui alternent légers séquenceurs, dosés homéopathiquement, et psiturisme mélodique teinté parfois d’un brin de mélancolie («Blackstar»). Erik joue de la six cordes avec sensualité, laissant s’envoler de poétiques échos onirimondiens, caressant l’instrument pour donner naissance à une musique faite d’Amour et de Plénitude. On est porté par ses vagues étoilées faites de scintillements d’infini au fil des notes qui s’égrènent et partent en spirales vers un vortex d’éternité. Nous sommes la barque bercée par les vagues océanes d’un Eden oublié, flottant sur de mouvantes caresses alanguies. «Water’s Edge» renoue avec les fragrances enoziennes par ses longs accords atmosphériques avant l’ultime renaissance d’harmonies célestes («Celestial Sphere») où se conjuguent des miroitements rêveurs capturés par l’horizon événementiel d’un rêve qui s’efface à regret. Et captivés d’un bout à l’autre, nous sommes surpris de constater que c’est déjà la fin du voyage.

25 years ago I released this album of ethereal neoclassical goth — I’m thrilled so many want to see it available in new formats, sounding better than ever! I remixed two songs to bring the vocals up; going back to the original DAT sources makes the whole album so much warmer and richer. Martin Bowes' remastering enhances Julianna Towns' sultry vocals, Oscar Herrera's passionate voice, Vicki Richards' dramatic violins and cover star Lisa Feuer’s heartfelt flute. And of course my drifting electronics and soul-searching lyrics.
