has been giving me divorce strength and inspiration since her Modern Love column in 2019, and she just took it to level 💯 with this memoir. 💯, y'all. I don't want to tell you what to do, but I really think you should read this book...

And our interview with Maggie is up on the podcast today!! We talk about wedding culture and female anger and the messiness of "healing" and more.

You're a force, Maggie Smith! Thanks for letting us read your heart. Mazel tov on the birth of this magnificent book baby. Xo.

For the past several years, I've offered a coaching program for divorced parents that addressed several different struggles parents face.

This year I decided to do something different and offer separate workshops for parents to pick and choose depending on their unique situation. The online workshops will take place weekly, beginning on July 19. They are:

7/19/22: Maximizing the Benefits and Minimizing the Drawbacks of Parenting After Divorce.

7/26/22: Building a Different Relationship With Your Child

8/2/22: Managing the Relationship With Your Ex

8/9/22: Dating After Divorce, and Introducing Your Children To Your Significant Other

We tend to think that if a marriage is "intact," then that's all that matters.

Except, it's not.

It's important to consider the health of the relationship and the long-term impact it will have on the couple and their children (and sometimes their family, friends, and neighbors too).

Good divorces can bring healing and improved relationships. Good divorces can also serve as lessons for children to learn how to deal with conflict.

Toxic marriages are just that: toxic.

I don't know about you, but I've no desire to celebrate the prolonged pain of people enduring a toxic marriage.

Hello weary friends

a blessing for divorcing families at the holidays

in difficult times, move step by step.
01/11/2021

in difficult times, move step by step.

My grandmother once gave me a tip:
In difficult times, move forward in small steps.
Do what you have to do, but little by little.
Don’t think about the future
or what may happen tomorrow.

Wash the dishes.
Remove the dust.
Write a letter.
Make a soup.

You see?

Advance step by step.
Take a step and stop.
Rest a little.
Praise yourself.
Take another step.
And then another.

You won’t notice, but your steps will grow more and more.
And the time will come when you can think about the future without crying.

what does it mean to be human? what does it mean to break and then heal?

what does it mean to be human? what does it mean to break and then heal?

"Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.
But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.

A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said."

We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.

The floods will come my dears. It will take almost everything away. We will keep losing the landmarks of who we were and who we are and we need more accounting for the ways that we can remind ourselves: yes, but I am still also me.

What we need is a blessing for this space:
a minute
a breath
a small way to say
I am *this.* And I am *that.*

I feel joy. And I am heartbroken.
I feel nothing in this moment and everything the next. Nothing will be okay again. But wait. Even though it’s hard to believe now, no we do not move on or forget. But we can allow life to take up the space it demands, hoping that one day our love will outweigh our sorrow.

If you find yourself needing more blessings, I invite you to download a free resource I've put together: 7 Prayers for Uncertain Times. Enter your name and email address at the link below to receive all of them. And to listen to my conversation with the beautiful Jan Richardson about the gift of blessings and who gives us more language for life's befores and afters go to the link below. Thank you my dears. And bless you!

Compassion doesn’t mean we don’t fight; it means we find strength in connection and understanding more than we find it anywhere else.
