Chronicling & Setting Foot on Historic Sites as part of a training on Digital Recording - The purpose of our travel and culture related documentation in Mountain Province is far more than Hollywood’s spaghetti cowboy plot “I came, I saw, I shot”. My role was to lecture and give tips on digital recording most especially of historic sites and events of cultural significance to a place known as the bastion of indigenous cultural communities-Bontoc.
Part of my lecture was actually made easy by Pixar’s Pitch, a type of storytelling likened to the movie Finding Nemo. I mentioned to the participants that their planned documentary and research work could also lead them to what I call ‘Eureka Effect’.
Indeed, our trek to a place in Bauko led us to set foot on old ritual places like the Dalikanan where travelers used to rest, cook their meals and perhaps spend the night as explained by Prof. Obie Noe Madalang of MPSPC. We weren't able to look for the Dalikanan stone used for cooking as it was probably included in the boulder that sank as parts of the place is prone to erosion. While trekking along pine covered hills of Bauko, we were told of ancient terrains passed by Anglican priests and bishops and we also viewed Otucan Sur that was said to be the first village to have tin roofs as it was the old trading area for lowlanders or non-native merchants who peddled their wares to the so-called y-Golots or what is now known as Igorots. Somewhere in Bauko between Lagawa and Banao in my Google map, there is this open space surrounded by rocks that was said to be a sacred ground where menfolks perform rituals and offer a dog as a form of sacrifice to ward-off evils and possible harm after a battle or tribal war. The square-like ritual place measures 21 by 21 square meters and I actually took a drone shot of it for documentation purposes.
While in Bontoc before our Bauko exploration, I actually went near the banks of the Chico river between Poblacion and Samoki to flight test and set the GPS coordinates of my Mavic Pro drone. I remember bathing naked at the waters while also washing or Nissan Patrol vehicle when I was still new as government Information Officer of then newly created Philippine Information Agency. Though Samoki is now a bustling commercial center, it was one of the popular sites of the “Fagfagto” or “Bagbagto”, the historic stone-throwing challenge among young men in Bontoc, one of the topics suggested by the participants of our training. , , ,

Travelling Around the Cordillera: Touring or travelling around the mountain provinces of the Cordillera is unlike moving around in the low lying areas of the country as you need to use vehicles that can traverse the bumpy roads and rugged terrains of the upland region. Seasoned travelers usually bring extra tires and back-up fuel and and their tools usually include a shovel and machete that is needed should they encounter landslide or blocking felled trees. , , , .

Bidding farewell to a place so loved by many that has become part of Baguio City's historic past symbolizing Cordillera's struggle for peace, independence, unity and bid for regional autonomy. - They punch typewriters to write their stories and dub their voices or record their interviews on analog tape recorders. News Photographers use negative films in capturing their subjects and they either develop it themselves or have it processed by a photo laboratory. After having typed their stories, the news writers have to rush to the telex service providers like PT&T or RCPI to wire their stories to their respective networks which are usually based in Manila. Telefax or faximile machines were available only towards the last decade of the twentieth century and pictures were either hand carried by a courier or sent via express parcel carrier to their publication firms.... , ,
