🌎 Listee Allen Ruppel gives back to those in need with his work as the president and co-founder of the Unity in Hope School System!

The Unity in Hope School System is a non-profit organization assisting families living under extreme economic hardship and discrimination in Iqbal Town, Islamabad, Pakistan. The organization is the only tuition-free Christian school in the area and it accepts members of all faiths.

For only $250 per student, the school provides food, clean water, uniforms, and backpacks to children for a full year. Management, including Allen himself, take no compensation from their work with the Unity in Hope School System. The organization relies on 100% philanthropic support and all funds are controlled in the United States. Financials are available to anyone upon request.

In 2023, the organization opened their second school with a community center that includes micro-loans, a business incubator, tutoring and many other community and spiritual based activities.

Educator Excellence: Susan Johnson

We're rounding out Teacher Appreciation Week with some words from Susan Johnson, a retired teacher who previously worked with Anchorage School District and the University of Alaska.

The idea of teaching didn't come to Susan Johnson until she was well into her college years, but after working as a teacher's aide, she knew she would work in education for the rest of her life.

Susan's work as an educator was guided by her belief that every student is capable of learning. For her, the most rewarding part of teaching was seeing her students succeed in learning a skill that they had struggled with.

In reflecting on her career, the most heart-felt moments were the times she reconnected with her past students and learned of their life's successes. Susan was particularly touched to learn that a struggling student under her tutelage went on to become a student himself, inspired by the care and instruction he received from her.

🍎 Educator : Nicholas Andronesco

Dr. Andronesco is an esteemed educator, researcher, and writer with 40 years of teaching experience to his credit. He began his teaching career in his home country of Romania where he taught math and science at a high school level. Young and dedicated to his craft, Dr. Andronesco spent nearly all of his free time tutoring students. In 1991 he relocated to the United States, earning his master’s degree from the University of Bridgeport. Since then he has excelled as a university professor, working with the University of Bridgeport since 2001.

Notably, Dr. Andronesco is the former coach for the Yale University Physics Olympics and the Romanian International Physics Olympics Team. He continues to tutor students and prepare them for the American League. Passionate about educating those in need, Nicholas established the Andronesco scholarship for students in both Romania and America.

Joan Gillman is a science educator at the The Browning School in NYC, where she has taught for the last decade.

Joan has always been an educator at heart, realizing her passion when volunteering with elementary school classes while still in high school herself. It was from that early experience that the framework of Joan’s teaching style was born. Joan’s work is guided by her compassionate and inclusive approach. This allows her to find new and exciting ways to engage her students and foster a lifelong love of learning within them. Joan often leans on project-based learning to help her students understand lessons while showcasing their own knowledge and creativity.

A pivotal moment in Joan's career was tutoring a young girl who struggled with reading despite completing first grade. Leveraging the student's remarkable memory, Joan turned learning into a game while teaching her the Dolch Sight Word List. By the end of their tutoring sessions, the girl was able to pick up a book and read it aloud. Joan watched the girl run to her mother with pride to show off her reading skills. That pride is something Joan will never forget. It is a testament to her caring and problem-solving nature.
