To celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Viasat’s South Asian Alliance (SAA) ERG hosted several events for employees to connect, learn, and give back!

To kick off the month long celebrations, SAA Members packed an incredible 1300 pounds of produce at the North County Food Bank. Stay tuned for more AANHPI Month activities!

Take-off with the team as they perform high-speed connectivity testing on a cross-country flight to prepare for commercial service from ViaSat-3.

“When ViaSat-3 was envisioned, there was a lot of theoretical simulations of how this system was going to work. Seeing it here in action, on a plan for the first time was super exciting! It’s a testament to all those folks that have envisioned the system and brought it to this point. It’s really neat to be able to be just a very small part of that,” shared Senior Engineering Director Derek Johnson.

Last month, we hosted our 9th annual Viasat's Veterans Transition Workshop event for transitioning veterans and their family members. Follow along as Marine veteran and Viasat Procurement Specialist Christian Galvis volunteers at the event.

“Volunteering for this event has allowed me to come back to the military community and help transition veterans who are in the same position I was,” shared Christian.

Earlier this month, our Viasat India employees celebrated International Women’s Day by hosting a book exchange. They wanted to incorporate their love for books and sustainability into an event all employees could enjoy!

Earlier this month, a group of Viasat volunteers went to South Carolina to launch Plugged In, a program providing free internet to an underserved community. The team applied their skills and passion for community impact in numerous ways, including developing and leading trainings on how to maximize satellite internet use and how to setup a new laptop.

Plugged In is a program through the Columbia Urban League, a nonprofit organization that promotes financial stability and racial inclusion in the Columbia, South Carolina area. In partnership with Viasat and the Fairfield, South Carolina County School District, Plugged In is bringing connectivity to internet deserts, providing those in underserved communities with internet access and bridging this digital divide.

Meet Software Engineering Intern Lillian! Lillian is joining us this summer from the University of Colorado Boulder as a part of our Space and Commercial Networks team. We connected with Lillian to learn more about why she chose to join Viasat and what she's most excited about during her internship. Read more below!

"I’ve wanted to intern at Viasat since I connected with several Viasat employees through a women in STEM organization called STEMblazers. From them and my own research, I heard about Viasat's great work culture and strong technical leadership, coupled with an amazing mission.

This summer, I’m most excited about the chance to learn lots about technology, especially about large language models (LLMs) and application programming interfaces (APIs) as they relate to my work. On a personal note, I’m excited to explore the Carlsbad campus and for the intern events!"

We can’t wait to see all that you will accomplish this summer, Lillian!

Konstantin Petrukhnov, a software engineer in our Dublin office, co-leads CoderDojo – an after-school program for kids to learn the basics of engineering. We asked Konstantin to share his experience:

“Robotics is a wonderful way for everyone to learn more about our world and gain valuable skills for their future. The more engineers we have, the more inventions they will create. Who knows, maybe some of the CoderDojo students will join Viasat and help us connect the planet.”

Over the past year, eight Viasat employees in Dublin have taught, mentored, and learned from 20 students through a program called CoderDojo. CoderDojo is a global movement of free, open, volunteer-led coding clubs (Dojos) where young people aged 7–17 (Ninjas) can explore digital technology with the support of their fellow Ninjas and volunteer mentors.

A group of Viasat employees are participating in Race Across America. The team will ride 3,000 miles from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland.

Fun fact: The team is using our very own L-band terminals to transmit critical data and communicate throughout their coast to coast journey. While L-band isn’t ideal for streaming videos and internet surfing, it’s reliable and will work well in any type of weather the team may encounter throughout the race.

Today we commemorate Juneteenth, the day 250,000+ enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom – two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, and more than two months after the end of the Civil War.

Juneteenth (‘June’ + ‘nineteenth’) is the oldest-known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Happy International Women’s Day! Viasat is proud to both in the workplace and our communities.

In November of 2022, 12 Viasat employees traveled to Hidalgo, Mexico in partnership with and to teach digital literacy to indigenous women in underserved areas.
