Today, we witnessed a spectacular red moon on the way home from a dinner. I looked it up when we got home and found out that it wasn't a lunar eclipse, also called a "blood moon". It was just randomly red today, possibly because, at the time we saw it, it was very close to the horizon. It was so very big and red, I'm glad we got some shots of it to keep and share with you. For those who don't know, when the moon is near the horizon it appears red because the moon reflects light from the sun. The sunlight has to pass through more of the Earth's atmosphere to get to the moon, and the atmosphere scatters all the green, blue, and purple light, hence it is red (sometimes orange or yellow depending on how close it is to the horizon with red being the closest). During a lunar eclipse, or a blood moon, the Earth is in between the sun and the moon, therefore it has to pass through a lot of atmosphere and it appears very red. The more dust or clouds in the atmosphere, the more red. 🌕🌙🌝
