In this 21 WFMJ archive photo, Vindicator photographer Ed Shuba captured this picture of the ruins of the Star Chrome Co. building at 1316 Market Street in Youngstown 68 years ago. Stacks of table tops and chairs can be seen in the rubble. About 150 firemen worked to save an adjacent apartment building. Fire Chief John Lynch said the fire was sparked by an incinerator used by men remodeling the building and estimated the loss at $200,000.

154 days in 2023 a fire station was closed due to a lack of staffing and 2024 has started with 3 station closures in 7 days. Why?

Mayor Brown and the City administration refuse to staff YFD appropriately and then refuse to overcome those shortfalls with an appropriate overtime budget.

2023 YFD OT budgeted - $300,000
2023 YPD OT budgeted - $2,000,000 (Increased to $2.9 million)

Why the disparity?

While Mayor Brown applauds YPD’s overtime as a commitment to their department and the citizens of Youngstown, our fire stations sit empty because we are not being given enough firefighters or enough overtime to fill them.
