Payne Denman is a golf legend in Smithville, TN, and he continues to make his mark both statewide and nationally! The DeKalb County High School grad won the 109th Tennessee State Amateur Championship in Loudon, which qualified him for the U.S. Amateur Championship this week in Chaska, MN.

Prior to heading to the tournament, Denman joined The T² Podcast, presented by Button Willow General Store & Coffee Shop, to talk about his experience at the State Championship, his expectations for the U.S. Championship, and to reflect on his many accomplishments to date.

Since the time of recording this episode, much has changed in the life of Payne Denman. After spending two seasons as an assistant golf coach at Middle TN State University, Denman accepted a position as an assistant at the University of Tennessee! He shared the news with us at the time of recording, but since it hadn't yet become official, we kept it under wraps.

Payne also shot a respectable 3-over-par during Stroke Play at the U.S. Championship, missing out on advancing to Match Play by only three strokes. We congratulate Payne for all his success this year, in past years, and we are looking forward to many more great things to come in the years ahead!!

Due to logistical complications (Tom is on vacation, and the Wi-Fi at his location is terrible), our next episode will be delayed for a few days. Our next episode will feature DeKalb County’s own Payne Denman. We spoke to Payne a few days before his being named an official assistant golf coach at the University of Tennessee. He told us that it was in the works, but he didn’t want to jinx it and announce it on air, which we completely understood! Payne is competing this weekend at the US amateur golf championship in Minnesota, and we wish him the best! We will have the episode out as soon as possible and we’re so sorry for the delay.

Stonehaus winemaker and visionary, Mr. Fay Wheeler - considered to be “the grandfather of Tennessee wine” - was instrumental in getting the Wine and Grape Act enacted in 1977. This Act permitted a winery to open in any county, wet or dry, providing the grapes were grown in Tennessee. Two years later in 1979, Fay and his wife, Kathy, and Mr. Robert R.
