Winner🏆Best Costumes🏆at the #stingerawards 2023 for Father of Nations (film) Aleisha Anderson
Attention to detail was the name of the game with wardrobe and costumes for the film. Each character had a representative style and colour pallette that matched what their character symbolized in the film. It took many many thrift store visits (thank you Victoria Pilot and Nathan Horch ) as well as an army of cast, crew, friends and family to breakdown the clothing and accessories to a post-apocalyptic state. We had "Distressing Pizza Parties" where everyone showed up with their "tools of destruction" and we bonded while ripping seams and sanding. We also used Sarah Kirschenman and Andy's garage for wardrobe. A team would be working while we were filming. Thank you to the background who also came prepared with pieces to fit the world!
I loved to use costume building sessions with the cast members as a tool to help shape the character with the actor. My director's heart took full advantage of this creative time with the cast. The clothing they wore was a big piece of their characters backstory, like Ibrahim's ripped suit, Amara's combat boots and Beni running shoes. This is one of my favourite co-creative expressions and I'd often take the cast shopping with me to the thrift store.
