On This Date in 1898: The Newfoundland Sealing Fleet was two two days into the Annual Harvest, and already jinxed with bad luck and 'tight ice'
Wednesday March 16: The sealers were more than eager to get back on the ice. Captain Barbour searched for the missing seals, but only one flag was found with a thousand seals. They were certain that the panned seals did not all blow away, but were no doubt stolen by the crew of another steamer (Capt. Abe and the Aurora were presumed to have been the 'culprits'). For the rest of the week the Greenland steamed northwest for thirty miles, cruising about killing seals and hauling them to the boat.
Among them STEPHEN SQUIRE, his brother ENOS SQUIRE, GEORGE
BURDEN, WILLIAM HANDCOCK and RICHARD "Dickie" HUNTER. All of Salvage. And a CHARLES RALPH, of Flat Islands.
